Shotguns don't have good penetration ability, and many indoor doors are metal underneath (at least they are in my house). This is for protection from fire - as in the hot stuff and not the firepower type. The robber is damn lucky that the pellets didn't bounce back at him. If he were smart, he would have directed his fire at the door frame in an attempt to weaken the wood where the lock bolt is. THAT might have worked.
