Normally bustling New York City turns eerily quiet ahead of storm …

New York's Union Square sits empty on Saturday ahead of Hurricane Irene's anticipated landfall

Irene did more damage to media credibility than anything else

Hurricane Hype
Irenes wrath: Media&authorities seen as crying wolf

Credibility Hurricane Hype
Irene's wrath: Media&authorities seen as crying wolf, Wow .

Wow, right now I would not want to be one of the many TV news anchors who have spent the past 16 or so hours hyping up this storm. They are all trying to cover up their sensationalism of the storm... Sadness in their voices as they look for a way to save face now that the storm is gone and virtually no damage is done.

They were warned of Mass destruction, widespread power loss for up to 15 days, houses destroyed by wind and major flooding. (ok there is flooding but not widespread, the usual floodplains have flooded as they do in heavy rain)
"Buy batteries, buy gas, flashlights, generators, non perishable food, water, radios, etc..." They were told. Well it worked, most gas stations in a ten mile radius are out of gas.

Batteries are scarce or non existent. Store shelves are wiped out, no bread, milk or eggs anywhere. BJ's wholesale club yesterday and the customer service rep said their sales are off the charts; the other BJ's did $400,000 in sales on Friday. Almost half a million dollars in sales on groceries and other non-major purchases in twelve hours!

Wow, the next consumer spending report is gonna make the economy look great. It is starting to look like 'Irene" is nothing more than a rainstorm on steroids being used as a way to boost consumer spending thus giving the appearance the economy is getting better. Last winter the winds were stronger with 17'' of snow dumped upon NYC.

During that storm the news would break into regular programming every hour or half hour or so. Some pay comcast $1200. a year to have hi-def cable tv in their homes so viewing choices are down to about 30 channels, half of them are in espanol though, and coverage of the storms will be different than all you who can afford 700 channels you never watch.

Anyway, for the past 17 hours there has been nothing but news on, all building up this storm, now the next 17 hours they will try to redeem themselves, offering various reasons why they said what they did a few hours ago.

LOL I was just checking on the Pix 11 site to see what the aftermath of Irene was and found these stats of people without power, you have to fricken laugh at the Mahattan one.....

has 20,084 customers without power.
has 10,665 customers without power.
has 30,067 customers without power.
has 1 customers without power.
has 5,625 customers without power.
Westchester has 28,577 customers without power.

ONE person without power in Manhattan LMAO that's too funny.........

It is an massive storm though and last I heard it's been downgraded to a tropical storm rather than a hurricane. I'm feeling the effects of the wind way up here.....

I just checked the online weather network radar and it appears that the eye might hit ottawa ...unless it takes a hard right turn east.....the edge might even hit toronto.....it's certainly going to nail Montreal....

From 2am last night, 7 inches of rain here thus far. During the more intense periods of the storm, bridges and ponds throughout town crested over onto the road. Several trees and branches down with random power outages. I haven't lost power as of yet, but still have the back half of the storm to bear. It looks like the rain is subsiding at least to the point where the water has retreated and the roads are open. The winds are expected to pick up as the back half passes, hopefully the storm will continue to lose strength as it travels. Hope everyone in the path stays safe and dry.

It was a farce . They scared you guys for no reason.

Well, the waterfall coming down off the stone wall was a nice water feature while it lasted.

LOL I bet it would have shocked your ass to see salmon jumping up your wall heheheh (kind of like that movie Tornado or whatever it was called about storm chasers and in one scene she says "we have cows" lol)

Hopefully this can ease the pain from the devastation of the tornado.

Watched it on the news. We should all be lucky that our problems are mild compared to them.

With all these radars and high technology how did they allow the kids to go to school?.
