Talk about having egg on their face. Not only did the Crown use a career criminal as its star witness to prosecute a Chinatown shopkeeper, but it is still moving ahead with its case against the real victim despite the fact their hero was once again busted Friday — accused of more shoplifting.

It is alleged that just two days after testifying against Lucky Moose owner David Chen, who placed him under citizens arrest for stealing plants from his store last year, Anthony Bennett was charged by Toronto Police for a string of plant thefts at a store just blocks away from Chen’s shop.

Maybe this comedy should be called, “The Keystone Crown!” Let’s call it for what it is — a colossal screw up that has brought incredible unfairness and lack of reasonable thinking to Ontario justice. That they ever moved ahead with charges on Chen and his co-workers in the first place was outrageous.

Imagine the gall. They call it justice but it’s not just. Everybody but the Crown seems to get that.

First of all, Bennett is not the star witness and little depends on his credibility. Chen was caught red handed with Bennett in the van. The police can safely give 90% of the evidence in the case.

Second, the crime of abducting someone in a van is far more serious than shoplifting plants.

Third, it has crossed my mind that perhaps Bennett is mentally defective or disturbed and that is why he continually gets caught pulling dumb shit petty crimes. His performance on the witness stand where he begged to go home is not normal witness behaviour.
