Transgender inmate sues jail over right to practice witchcraft

There is all kinds of potential debate here, both on what qualifies as a religion and what rights do inmates have? Is Wicca a registered religion? - If jails are observing Jewish rights or Islamic rights to food/practice, do they have to for all groups? I would think so. It's a shitty position to be in when your inmates are demanding to be allowed to start fires.

Well, where is the debate?.

Good points.

If your "rights", due to your religion, was not determined by your "religion" being registered, then anybody could create their own "religion", and then have to be give all sorts of "rights".

On one point though, if a person is serving jail time, for crimes against humanity, murder for example, then they have should have to give up their religious "rights", as they obviously didn't follow their religion, including if their religion "called" for them to commit murder or disfigure.

Not sure if you are agreeing or disagreeing with me, maybe you could confirm one or the other.

See post #7 that agrees with me.

Yes, it should be said that the person in the article is in jail for second degree sexual offense. So, fuck them. (imho)

The way I see it.....if you're convicted of a crime and imprisoned, you've already given up your rights. Pray inside your head. Do what you can to observe your religion within what the prison rules allow. But tough luck if your religion requires any special items or procedures that step outside the rules of the prison. You gave up your rights when you did something to put yourself in prison in the first place. In as free of societies we have in Canada and the US, with as much help as there is out there for people, if you have to break the laws to live, then you are doing something wrong.

Don't want to lose your freedom.....follow the laws. Don't like the laws, follow the procedures to try and get them changed. If you can't get them changed, move to another country with laws the way you want them.

I still don't see why we pay prisoners for work, why we have to pay for them to get educations, why we give them cable tv. You are in there to suffer for something you did wrong. Some prisoners have it so good they will get out and commit a crime just so they can get back in. It's ridiculous!
