I didn't read the article, but when you think about it, look how much trust society puts into the business professionals we interact with in life, not realizing how many of them are probably substance abusers.

Doctors, lawyers, pilots, police officers, bus drivers - all people we hope would be sober and rational as we entrust them with our very lives.

The push for random drug testing followed the tragic death of passenger Jadranka Petrova. The mother of two was killed after her Lawrence Ave E. bus slammed into the back of a flatbed truck in August 2011. The bus driver, who passed a breathalyzer but refused a drug test, was later charged with criminal negligence causing death and possession of marijuana.
But the union argues that even the impetus for the transit agency’s proposal doesn’t hold up to scrutiny: The charges against the driver were ultimately stayed and he was cleared of any wrongdoing in relation to the accident.

I just don't understand why there is not a criminal charge to go along with it if he/she was impaired while operating a vehicle of some type.

It's the union's job to defend it's members. I don't understand the hostility towards an individual or an entity doing it's job and following it's mandate??

Would you equally defend the police force when an individual officer acts inappropriately? If someone breaks a law, they should be punished, not protected because they are part of a group. Hell, isn't that why people complain about things like "the old boy network"? The union's job is supposed to be about fair treatment, not support under any and all circumstances. That's why people don't support things like unions.

Guess that is why people equally don't like defence lawyers..... until they need one.
