I'd tend to agree but I don't think that really is the point....the point is, she submitted something for prior approval then chose (accidentally or on purpose) to change it. And while most of us agree that hell isn't a bad expletive, to some, it's worse than mutherfucker.....and just like politicians, when speaking in public you have to watch what you say.......

I disagree, you are treating this as if the submission and acceptance formed a contract. Treating a validictory speech as a contract and the changing of it in a minor fashion as a major breach is beyong stupid. Surely someone close to the situation has the brains to put this in context. Withholding her diploma is like killing a gnat with a sledgehammer.

I am sure this principal is scratching his head wondering, "How could my top pupil, a student that must have scored high during the creation section in Science class, have uttered such a blasphemous word?!". Luckily she didn't use Mordor, Oz, Narnia, or one of a thousand other fictional places. No, I think the consensus would be that "motherfucker" is a worse word to use than "hell".
If the news report is accurate and she received only a 4.0, then the principal should evaluate his curriculum and place more emphasis on the academics of his school rather than the score of the next football game. I am betting (assumption, purely based on travels in that region) that if the star quart-e-r-back uttered the same word (*gasp), he would have received an "Atta boy" and a pat on the back.
Punishment does not fit the infraction. This is a "Talking to" type of infraction, not a "Let's hold 12 year's of someone's life hostage infraction".

And principal, heads up, if this guy comes to your town,

Toss him in prison before any dancing breaks out.

Not so much a contract but a promise....to recite the speech approved........

You have to wonder if there was some sort of guideline given as to what words are forbidden and what isn't.....like say forbidden topics include:
premarital sex
abortion
drugs
alcohol
curse words
etc
