OTTAWA—Six people have been killed and many more injured in the devastating crash of a Via Rail train and a double-decker city bus in Ottawa.
Witnesses described the bus barrelling through a lowered rail barrier as passengers screamed.
The collision at a level crossing happened at 8:48 a.m., during morning rush hour. Photos posted to Twitter by witnesses showed the double-decker bus with its entire front end sheared off.
Five people were declared dead at the scene. One transported to hospital later died. There are 30 others injured in hospital, 10 of them critically, according to paramedics.
Via Rail said there were no major injuries on Train 51 but service on the Ottawa-Toronto route was shut down.
A bus passenger said the bus driver braked but “much too late.” He couldn’t recall if gates were down but says warning lights were flashing.
Passengers yelled in alarm as the bus crossed tracks in path of VIA train, another passenger said.
Pascal Lolgis, who witnessed the crash, told Canadian Press the bus appeared to drive through a lowered crossing barrier.
“Boom! It went into the train like that,” Lolgis said. “He didn't stop. He must have lost his brakes. Or he had an . . . attack or whatever.
