MONTREAL — The tax on cigarettes is up, thanks to the latest provincial budget.
Likewise, prices on wine and spirits have gone up.
Prices for all the so-called sins keep going up, climbing ever higher.
Into all this bad news comes the uplifting announcement that something is going down: the price of Viagra.
Pfizer Canada announced Thursday that effective “immediately” the price of the male erectile dysfunction drug will be reduced to match the price of the generic version.
If you still want the magic blue pill, you have but to ask your pharmacist for it by name. Same price, presumably same results.
A ruling by the Supreme Court on Nov. 8 allowed Teva Canada Ltd. to begin marketing tablets of Sildenafil citrate, a generic form of the patented Viagra.
Teva first challenged Pfizer’s patent in 1998. The rulings and appeals went up and down, first in Pfizer and then Teva’s favour, culminating in the decision this month that worked in the favour of the generic brand.
“We are lowering original Viagra’s price to be in line with generic versions because we are committed to ensuring that Viagra patients continue to have access to the original — made by Pfizer, and at a competitive price,” said Scott Wilks of Pfizer Canada.
