ST. GEORGE, UTAH—Crews are cleaning up thousands of migratory birds that made a crash landing in Utah after apparently mistaking a Wal-Mart parking lot and other areas as bodies of water.
Teresa Griffin of the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources tells the Spectrum newspaper that employees have been driving around the area picking up the dead or injured birds. People are also dropping off birds at the department's office.
Thousands of migrating birds crashed throughout Southern Utah late Monday night, resulting in a marathon rescue and collection effort that is still underway.
"They're just everywhere," Griffin told Spectrum. "It's been non-stop. All our employees are driving around picking them up and we've got so many people coming to our office and dropping them off."
Wildlife officials say storm clouds above city lights Monday night probably confused thousands of grebes, which are a duck-like aquatic bird that migrates south for the winter.
The birds mistook the Cedar City Wal-Mart parking lots and other nearby areas for bodies of water, officials say.
Thousands of the birds were killed, but more than 2,000 had been rescued by Tuesday evening.
The surviving birds are being transported to unfrozen bodies of water in Washington County, Griffin said.
