An 18-year-old girl has been charged with manslaughter for urging her friend to commit suicide.

Conrad Roy III, 18, committed suicide last summer in a Kmart parking lot in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. But now investigators say his friend Michelle Carter, also 18, may have encouraged him to do it, WBZ-TV reports.

"It is alleged that Ms. Carter had firsthand knowledge of Roy's suicidal thoughts," the Bristol District Attorney's office said in a statement Thursday to the Sun Chronicle.

A legal morase. In Canada we can use the charge "counselling to commit..." but it is hard to prove and sentence. A common psychiatric approach a few years ago, when faced with a person who talked about suicide (but never intended to commit it, just wanting attention) was "go ahead...". Is that the same thing?

Even if they decide they can't charge her with anything, someone needs to attach the label of Sociopath to her file.

Real good chance she'll have legal dealings in the future, and it'd be nice to know what you were dealing with when she's around.

I tried that line of thinking once with someone. Almost a huge mistake.

I will never say that to anyone again.

I get the distinct feeling that there is a lot more to this couple than we will ever know.

Doesn't she remind you of Homolka?.

I can't understand why when you know a person is suicidal, and has tried to die, why you would then encourage them to do so.....so cruel.... even so, I was surprised at the charge.
