What do you miss from years gone by?

50 cent a LITRE gasoline?

Oh man, I'm going to show my age now, I miss 50 cent a GALLON gasoline...... I used to ride a honda 125 enduro and 75 cents would do me for about 2 weeks in gas. Then I got my licence and would ride it on the road. A buck a week in gas would be more than enough.
Actually... my earliest recollection of gas prices was 39 cents a gallon! I was too young to drive back then, but my father (a Dutchman, and therefore frugal to the point of fault), would drive to the other side of our hometown to save that extra .X cents/ gallon... In my hometown growing up, we used to have this discount gas retailer named Beaver... and it always had the best price around- problem is there was only 2 of those stations in our city... So I remember driving to the Beaver with my dad to get gas for $39.9 cents a gallon!

To put that into pespective... 1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609188 liters, so 1 litre of gas would be just under 9 cents, representing about an 1100% difference compared to today's price of about $1.00/ litre!!! (If I've done my math correctly...) :arf:

I used to buy my gas at the Fina station right on the access to the offroad trails. I'd walk it out of my parent's garage, across the street, fill it up and off I'd go. This was back when there were still areas you could ride a trail bike in the city.

Now, one of the main reasons I think gas is so costly now, isn't really that we're running out, but that in the 70's, OPEC was formed where before we'd get oil from whatever two bit desert sultan that was living in a tent. Then they all got together and said "whoa" no more cheap oil for YOU infidel......and plus before the government realized that they could rape the population by double triple and quadruple taxing gas and people putting up with it.

One other thing I miss:

ONE sales tax on goods or services purchased. This is one area I wish we were more like the US: if their government tried to pull the shit ours does to us? There'd be another revolution. We are WAY too passive here......

I totally agree, look how we have had the HST shoved down our throats without even a whimper. It seems the retailers put a stop to the recycling tax crap but they will find a way to get that going again.

I miss:

Arcades, and games of all types not just FPS' and Street Fighter clones.

Being able to ride a bike without a helmet.

Parks with awesome metal climbing structures and carousels.

People being able to admit their stupidity instead of trying to sue someone else for it.

I miss The Ponderosa for steaks and The Red Barn for chicken. I also miss Zellers for picking up bored housewives in my young 18 year old adventures.

THE red barn...holy crap that's a long time ago....they were everywhere too....How about when Harvey's was a REAL burger joint, not a corporation outlet? They are way better than burger slut and McMonkey's but getting worse all the time.

One thing I DON'T miss about the "good old days" is how at the home centers if you didn't know what you were doing, the staff looked at you with total disdain. Thank Home Depot for putting a stop to that. I know when I was a kid and just starting out in wood working asking any of them a question gave them an oppurtunity to treat you like a piece of crap. So instead of asking, I'd read books and try out what I learned....no seminars, no DIY shows, (except for this old house).

I miss freedom.

And by that I mean being able to speak without worrying about political correctness, and not having the government and lobby groups scrutinizing over every little aspect of my life, trying to tell me what is best for me.

When I could smoke
Say Merry Christmas
Buy a chocolate bar in school
Play lawn darts
Choose to drive without a seat belt
Have a beer in the park
Give a lady a genuine compliment at work without fear of a harassment case. "That new haircut looks great on you".
Kick someones ass when you caught them vandalizing your property

The world and society is turning into a great big pussy where everyone is afraid to say or do anything in fear that it might offend someone else. It's bullshit.

You boys are old, i've never heard of the Red Barn before. The Ponderosa I believe are still in the good old USA.

You are correct they still are in the US. Another thing I miss is door to door delivery by Canada Post. I know Toronto still enjoys this service but in the burbs we have to walk to the super-mail boxes. I don't mind in the summer but what a pain in the ass it is on those cold winter days!
