What makes a girl attractive

Teens starving themselves to get ‘thigh gap’

Teens are starving for a “happy gap.” That’s the space between a female’s super-skinny upper legs that don’t touch.
And this thigh gap is the latest deified look, a tumblr darling and a disturbing body trend fixating and hurting teen girls.

Glamourized and glorified, teens are copying thigh gaps sported by skinny fashion models and celebrities, by dieting, exercising and outright starving themselves so their thighs don’t touch.
And they share their pain, pleasure and pictures on countless thinspo forums. Shocking images of impossibly thin thighs and alarming declarations of self-body hatred are trending worldwide, filling web pages, and Twitter profiles, dedicated to the elusive gap, like those of models Cara Delevingne and Kate Moss, and Eleanor Calder, girlfriend of Louis Tomlinson from One Direction.
The thigh gap craze even extends to Pinterest where tips promote froggers and sideway scissors for the gap minded.

According to psychotherapist Kimberly Moffit, many famous women in the media have the glorified thigh gap and are praised for it – “it’s a new benchmark for beauty.
“It’s a way for young women to quantify their beauty and prove to themselves that they are attractive - especially if they don’t feel that way on the inside,” says Moffit, of Kimberlymoffit.com.
And the online group mentality fuels the unhealthy fire – “it normalizes and even glamourizes the obsession.”

While the pressure to be uber thin in not particularly new, what is different is the far-reaching and powerful impact social media has on its captive teen audience, says psychotherapist Deborah Mecklinger. “Girls are posting pictures faster than they can change their clothes and they care even more about how they are seen by their thousands of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram friends.”
The pressure to be bikini-worthy for the world to see has ramped up the eating disorder epidemic, says Mecklinger, of walkthetalkcoaching.com.
Girls are now pressured to look like the mannequins - “have you ever seen a mannequin’s thighs touch?”

Thighs that were once a private matter must now be shared if you are a teen with technology, she adds.
Body image expert Dr. Robyn Silverman says girls are “thinspired” to reach a standard typically unattainable without unnatural and unhealthy dieting or restricting practices.
Then “social media provides another layer - competition and camaraderie. Who can get there the fastest? Who can be the best example of the trend? And what support can I get while I’m struggling to attain my goal?” says Silverman.

“And then, once you have achieved the elusive thigh gap you are part of an exclusive club that only the most committed can frequent. Girls receive positive feedback for their self control and their achievement even though the way they got there can be extremely dangerous,” adds Silverman, author of Good Girls Don’t Get Fat: How Weight Obsession is Messing Up Our Girls & How To Help Them Thrive Despite It.

It doesn’t matter how you get there, just get there is the motto, adds Silverman, of drrobynsilverman.com.

According to Dr. Barbara Greenberg, the trend has our daughters believing “that in order to be thin enough, good enough, attractive enough and young woman enough they must have a visible gap between their thighs.”

Our teens should be focused on friendships, passions, hobbies but instead they’re “focusing on further self-flaggellation by attempting to whip their bodies into shape by developing a visible gap between their thighs,” says Greenberg, of drbarbaragreenberg.com.

Meanwhile, bullies are the ones who promote this sort of body shaming among their peers, believes Dr. Mary Jo Rapini. People who talk like this are mean, catty and very insecure – elevating themselves by bringing others down.

“Anyone who promotes anything that isn’t good for you, makes you feel badly about yourself, or lowers your self esteem has a low self esteem themselves, and usually has a shallow sense of their own self worth,” adds Rapini, of maryjorapini.com.

Empower
Don’t let your daughter be a gap girl. Empower daughters to focus on the space between their ears and not their thighs
Parents need to engage with their kids and focus on how to build their self esteem, stresses teen expert Dr. Mary Jo Rapini. “Focus on what your child does well.”
Counter the effects of thinspo by looking at magazines with your daughters, noting the people featured that are of normal weight. “Talking to your child frequently about the beautiful parts of their body helps your child feel confident as well,” adds Rapini.

According to psychotherapist Kimberly Moffit, young women need to focus less on their bodies as an “achievement” and more of a sign of overall health. “Being able to view your body as a tool that helps you get through everyday life - and hopefully make it through life without osteoporosis - is a much more healthy way to look at it,” says Moffit, adding that females that take part in sports are less likely to develop eating disorders.

Adds relationship expert Debra Macleod: “We need to keep sending the message to girls that they are worth more than the circumference of their thighs.

“These girls want to feel sexy and desirable, but they need to be reminded that a sexy woman is healthy and has curves.”

When will people realize that the fashion industry is dominated by GAY MEN....not that there is anything wrong with that, however,,,,what do gay men like? Other gay men. They fashion clothing for girls that look like boys. So now our girls think they have to look like boys to be attractive. What the hell happened to embracing the curves? ugh :(
