Not sure there is a definition. I think it is up to the couples to decide. Why not just enjoy it without worrying about that? Once you define it, rules, constraints, expectations....possible disappointment, start to appear. You're together, you enjoy each other, the rest will take care of itself.

Kidding aside, I think someone starts having a significant role in your life when you allow them. IMO a BF to me would be someone I feel is me and him against the world.
