Disney owns ABC and thus Modern Family, who has a gay couple as main characters.

What is different is the target audience being that the show is on the Disney Channel and aimed at pre-teens and tweens

When I was a kid we had the WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY on every Sunday night.
It was hosted by Walt and as such we might have felt the man was the company.
