I sent my mom a card for the first time in years.
Looked at Mother's Day cards in the grocery store - $9 for a crappy looking card with sentimental crap I'd never say to my mother. Went to the Dollar store - $2 for a really pretty card with an appropriate message.

TORONTO - Mother’s Day is a reminder to fellas that the women in our lives are smarter and braver than us.
My mom, for instance, went back to school in her 60s and got a PhD at Berkeley. Her expertise is in artificial intelligence. At least I think it is. I can never understand what the hell she’s talking about.
My sister has a masters degree, my girlfriend is an MBA. Me, I’ve got high school, a cup of coffee at Carleton University, and the Sun’s work-safety course.
History is adorned with examples of the superiority of women, mothers in particular, from the Blessed Virgin Mary to Laura Secord to Jackie Kennedy to Angelina Jolie.
If women ran the world, we’d be a much happier, more peaceful planet.

No, no, lady boss, that’s not it at all and, by the way, happy Mother’s Day to you, too.
This is not an apple polishing column. Science backs me up. Let’s look first at intelligence.
Women’s IQ passed men’s in 2012, by a full point, according to IQ guru James Flynn, and presumably the gap is widening every day.
Men used to be smarter, IQ wise. You might remember those good old days. But women’s scores have shot up as they made inroads in education and careers, while still doing most of the child-rearing.
Men still perform slightly better at math, a totally useless advantage given today’s calculators. Also, we are better at some manual tasks, so if assembling Ikea furniture is your measure of intelligence, we’re smarter.
On the other hand, for whom are you assembling that vanity. Exactly. So who’s the smart one?
This is often a touchy subject. Gender differences — or any differences — are taboo in this age of political correctness and socio-censorship.
Besides, most women have long believed the male brain is actually situated south of his belt buckle.
By contrast, courage has long been assumed the preserve of males. America’s highest military award, the Medal of Honour, has been given to 3,468 men and exactly one woman, a Civil War surgeon later arrested for impersonating a man.
Just three of 20 recipients of Canada’s highest civilian award, the Cross of Valour, have been women.
Our lives are rife with cliche images of girls screaming at spiders, fainting at the drop of a hat, or squealing when a bat swoops on them.
Poppycock. Anyone who has witnessed childbirth or tried to get between a mother bear and her cub has a clearer picture of a woman’s courage.
There is scientific evidence of that, too.
American Psychologist reports on a study of brave folks, from Holocaust heroes to organ donors, that found as many as 60% of them were female.
Between brains and balls, so to speak, it’s no wonder women are taking over the world.
Albertans have elected two women premiers in a row, after NDPer Rachel Notley won on Tuesday night. No one (except me, I guess) has remarked on her gender — it’s her socialist stripe in a “red-neck” stronghold that shocks.
Europe’s most powerful leader is Germany’s Angela Merkel. Hillary Clinton is threatening to make history in America. Ontario’s premier and NDP leader are women, and the PCs will make it a sweep if Christine Elliott is named leader this weekend.
Whatever you think of their politics, those are smart cookies.
As Bolivian president Evo Morales put it recently. “I don’t want the guys to get upset, but I’m seeing that women are more intelligent.
“It hurts me as a man, but it’s true.”
Doesn’t hurt me one bit. I’m happy to hand the reins to the moms of the world.
Some people groaned and rolled their eyes when Mayor John Tory hijacked the nomination process for the TTC commission this week because none of the candidates was female.
Not me. I don’t want a bunch of knuckle-dragging guys — and Councillor Shelley Carroll — driving our transit system. It’s not Ikea, you know.
So, pal, if your tiny brain is up to it, remember one thing this Mother’s Day:
She’s better than you.
