Brian Wijeratne woke Sunday morning to loud pounding on the door.He went downstairs and opened it. Two OPP officers were standing there. They told him there had been an accident. They told him that his father and younger sister were dead.Jayantha, 49, and Eleesha, 16, were killed in a head-on crash with an alleged drunk driver who was going the wrong way on the eastbound QEW ramp onto Hwy. 427 north around 2:45 a.m.

Sunday morning.
Antonette, Wijeratne’s mother, was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The 19-year-old driver of the SUV that plowed into their minivan was also taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police said he will be charged with impaired driving. The family was returning from a 5-day vacation in Florida. They’d just dropped off an aunt and uncle in Mississauga and were nearly back at their North York home.Sgt. Dave Woodford said police had received calls about the vehicle on the wrong side of the road and were responding.

But they were too late.
Wijeratne, 19, had to tell his mother, in critical condition at Sunnybrook, that her daughter and husband were dead.“It just destroyed her,” said Wijeratne. His parents brought their young children to Canada from Sri Lanka on Jan. 29, 2000, escaping civil war and looking for better opportunities.Jayantha worked as a maintenance manager at hotels after arriving in Canada. He encouraged his children to study hard, to build a future.Wijeratne is studying engineering at Ryerson University, and Eleesha was to start Grade 12 at Bishop Allen Academy in the fall.

She planned to become a chemical engineer. Her dream schools were McMaster or Waterloo.
She was a fun-loving and always joking — a mirror of her father, said Wijeratne. And they are gone, because of an alleged drunk driver, he said.“I don’t want to believe it, it just seems like a dream. It’s not real,” said Wijeratne.

That is so sad. After all the commercial ads and police awareness shitheads keep on killing innocent people.

This is one of those times where the death penalty should be brought in for special circumstances....I mean this is an open and shut case: wrong side of the road, drunk, there is NO doubt he caused the accident....

But then again, all the pc do gooders will be saying "he shouldn't suffer for the rest of his life because of one little mistake".....I say "fry the bastard".....

Keep educating people.....but they are idiots out there who feel
they can not be caught or crashed......There is No excuse for this....
Using " I Did not Know " does not cut it .......

My belief is that one day all vehicles will have breathe devices built into the ignition regardless of whether one drinks or not. That is the only feasible way to curb such behaviour.

The next way to deal with them is public execution. I'd be happy to do it.

Won't happen because 1) it's a great idea, 2) less ticketing means less money for both the police and lawyers!

Yes I can be very cynical.

I think dui is the one case where everyone doesn't care about the fines/tickets etc......it costs infinitely more investigating the accidents etc and manning the ride stops.....

I've heard of people who have been convicted of DUI having breathalizer interlocks installed on their cars......the problem with that is you just have to get someone who isn't drunk to blow into it.....

the whole major issue with drinking and driving is that people drive to a bar, then after a few drinks their common sense goes out the window therefore can't make intelligent choices.....there was a campaign geared specifically to this, it went something like "first off, don't even take your car with you, plan your way home BEFORE you start drinking....."

I honestly feel that it should be a one shot deal. You get caught blowing over? You lose your licence forever......we have enough cars on the road, we don't need idiots like this out there.....

I don't know that even this would stop them...there was one guy out west who was caught, I think it was, 27 times driving drunk......you'd think after the 3 rd time the judge would just lock him up.....The problem is you don't need a valid driver's licence to buy a car......
