If you are alive and healthy then you are blessed and have been blessed. Some people say "god bless, or "may god bless" as a way of thanking you sincerely. They have nothing to give back to you but blessings so that's what they say.... go with those blessings knowing that you are a good guy, you've done a good deed....you've given out of kindness and that kindness will be repaid....I assure you

People with nothing need to believe in something. Their saying 'god bless you' has nothing to do with you, but everything to do with them and their silent prayers that someone might recognize that they are a human being in pain/struggling. They are being thankful in the only way they know how, and also attempting to repay you since they can't in a monetary way.
