This is a perfect example of overly sensitive people fucking up something that could be really positive and truly life changing.
Was there room for change with the assignment? Yes! Don't scrap it. That makes no sense.
It was meant to cause a healthy safe place to discuss hard real life topics. This is the time to teach kids about tolerance and inclusion.
Personally. I think the assignment should have been laid out in the course outline handed out to parents. Which lets be real, they won't read anyway but at least the school can say - you were told.
Second, I would have made the assignment anonymous so that it could be used as a positive or negative example during the discussion.
Third, I would offer up a similar list that only has viable assest per person. Example, the Muslim student could also know how to navigate the stars like a human compass and the gay whoever could be an amazing fishermen.
Then during your discusion you can also compare valueable traits and characteristics vrs the labels we systematically use based on a systemic society.
