Do you realize how much water it takes to do a load of laundry? Long story, but I have to add cold water to the rinse cycle and you wouldn't believe how many litres it takes to fill up the machine!
But ya - I don't know why people complain so much either. I remember doing my younger brother's cloth diapers with a wringer washer and 2 rinse tubs, and they all had to be fed through the ringer by hand 3 times per load. That was work.
