I know GE also has really good water filters. Large scale use. Unfortunately those governments (and / or our money by way of assistance) never purchases these devices for the people. THe LifeStraw was developed in 2005 - In 8 years I wonder how many are in use in the Third World.

Neat concept but not sure if I would ever use it. There is still that 1 %.

These types of water purifiers have been around for quite a while. The originals were pump-like devices, some with very fine filters to extract the cysts and organisms floating about.
When in doubt, boil for 10 minutes.
