3D gun printing advocate Defense Distributed has emerged triumphant in a legal battle to freely publish online blueprints that could allow users to manufacture firearms.

The victory spells the end of an ongoing lawsuit against the US Department of State -- which in 2013, forced Defense Distributed founder Cody Wilson to pull down files from the DEFCAD website because they violated International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) protections. The State Department argued that blueprints of Wilson's 'Liberator' pistol, which had already been downloaded more than 100,000 times, were classified as 'exports' and could therefore not be distributed according to law.

Together with the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), Defense Distributed fought back by suing the State Department for trampling on the right to free speech. Now, after three years, the government has approvedthe gun blueprints (Ghost Gunner files and CAD files) for public release.

This means that from August 1st, which is when Wilson intends to relaunch DEFCAD, it will be legal to download the schematics for a 3D-printed gun. The sanction is being appealed in various ways, but ultimately, it could set a precedent for other countries who previously deemed the printing of 3D guns as illegal.

Too late

There was not going to be any way to stop this, regardless if it was illegal to "download" or not.

One does not need to down load the design, just copy a design to a flash drive, and distribute at will, shit, send a design as an attachment in an email, which be easier to police, but would have be done anyway.

Once a design is out there, it becomes uncontrollable.

This is kinda scary though.

Will wait on the new laws that will minimize it's impact before I make judgement.

Dude, there are no laws that can be enacted now to stop this anyway, the genie is already out of the bottle.

But I do agree with you, that if some innovative laws could be drawn up to better control the distribution of ammo, might have some impact.

You guys act as if anyone can't get guns now. All of the laws on the books don't prevent criminals from getting their hands on guns as it is. So why prevent the law abiding from being able to make their own? Hell, there are plenty of people out there that already make their own firearms at home. You can order the parts or if you have the knowledge and tools, make everything from scratch. I'm glad the over reaching government lost this one. We are guaranteed the right to keep and bear arms in the US.

There was another ruling somewhere in the US that also states that the AR15 is a sporting rifle and not a military rifle (which it most definitely isn't) which should back governments in the US off of trying to ban those as well.

We're getting some of our freedom back.....nice!

Have to disagree dude.

This manufacturing technology removes just about any possibility of gun control in your country.
I think that's why the law makers just said, fuck it, why bother now.

And the AR15 was designed and first used as a military assault rifle.

And again, don't get me wrong here, I am in no position to state how your country should be run, just my opinion on the result of this tech.

SEATTLE -- A U.S. federal judge on Tuesday stopped the release of blueprints to make untraceable and undetectable 3D-printed plastic guns as President Donald Trump questioned whether his administration should have agreed to allow the plans to be posted online.

The company behind the plans, Austin, Texas-based Defense Distributed, had reached a settlement with the federal government in June allowing it to make the plans for the guns available for download on Wednesday.

The restraining order from U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik in Seattle puts that plan on hold for now. “There is a possibility of irreparable harm because of the way these guns can be made,” he said.

Don't you have to register to create one?.

So, your name will be on any piece you produce?.

Can someone please explain to me in easy words how this works?.

Doesn't plastic burn when hot?.

1. We like no gun control. The second amendment says that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The problem isn't the guns.....it's what people do with them. More people die every year from any number of tools (cars for example) that are misused. We don't outlaw the tool, we put the people who misuse them in jail according to the laws for how they misused them.

2. The AR15 was originally developed as a sporting rifle and the design was then purchased by the government to develop the M16 for use by the military. It wasn't something that was designed initially for the military. It was for hunting and target practice, hence, sporting.

I believe that every individual is allowed to produce one firearm without a serial number on it. I only know that because of some of the discussions I heard about this case. Don't hold me to it.

The thread is about the technology of making guns in anybody's kitchen, which would obviously support NO gun control, I personally can't agree with that, but we do live in different countries, different strokes,...

On the AR 15, for what I have read on different sources, confirm that it was initially designed as a military assault rifle.

No sense in continuing this argument, we have different philosophies on the subject.

As it should be in Canada, but as I have already stated, if some one gets a hold of the file, and it can be copied/hacked, how is it going to be controlled ?

And what's stopping anybody else in the world to develop a design, this guy isn't the only person in the world who can come up with a design.

Welcome to the 21st century, and it will only get worse.
