In college I won a case of beer in a Bobbing for Apples Hallowe'en game, and no, I do not mean any the slang meanings of bobbing for apples, I mean the real game, with a barrel, water, and apples. I won the first case with a time of 5 seconds, and tied for a second case with less than a second, but the other guy posted his time first in that round, using my technique, and you had to beat the best-time-to-date, to win a round, (there were three).
The wrong way to do it is to try to lift an apple from above, perhaps by biting the stem with your teeth. What you do is plunge your whole head under water, push one apple to the side of the barrel, so you have something to push it against, then you bite into the apple, and bring your head out of the water with the apple in your mouth, like one of those pig's heads at a king's banquet.
We didn't have a fridge in the dorm room, so the beer got skunked. It was O'Keefe Ale, which tasted like piss, anyway. I wasn't old enough to drink it legally, but they couldn't tell.
