Judges want to know why Ontarians are skipping jury duty

Would you show up for jury duty or come up with some lame excuse that you are are not worthy

For $20 per day I take a pass. Never understood why the pay is so low.

Anyone?.

I would say probably because it isn't a union job and supposedly it is your civic duty so they give you a token amount to cover expenses like parking, gas, lunch etc.

I'd go if ever called upon.

Be careful what you wish for Tboy. Nothing to do with the pay but they keep you in the dark about the case for weeks if not months. You are not allowed to talk to anyone about it and some cases drags on for a long time.

It drained me mentally, all I have to say.

I'm not wishing for it but as I said, if called upon I'd go. I feel it is a part of my civic responsibility. I know it can be a pain in the ass. My dad went and he got a lame case and was in and out in 2 or 3 days......

I would reject any potential juror who wanted to serve really desperately.

Me, I'd be willing to serve more out of civic obligation and curiosity - I'm surprised I've never been asked in all these decades I've been eligible.

I could just about imagine being in the deliberation room with you debating a case,lol.

Why not just use the unemployed? If they're on welfare, they have more time than me.

If they really can't find anyone else, then I guess I'd have to.

The lawyer make big bucks (not unionized),
The judges make big bucks (not unionized),
The guards make a decent wage(probably unionized),
The cops make a decent buck (definitely unionized)

so my question is why on earth should I LOSE A DAY's pay or a weeks pay when everyone else involved with the case is earning a wage? I think it's an unfair request if it causes a financial burden.

You shouldn't lose a days pay. My understanding is that the honourarium is given to your employer and you receive your days wage. It's the same as covering the lost amount of a days pay.

Police are unionized (association)
Court Officers are special constables paid by the areas Police Service and are unionized (association)
Corrections Officers are unionized (opseu)

Personally, I wouldn't welfare recipients on a jury. I would prefer average income, gainfully employed and educated.

As for ditching jury duty, I would think that most don't want to hear the horrible facts or have to make a decision on someone's life.
