It is said that there is 38 millions pieces of trash on this remote island......

Which I don't find surprising, sad to say. One of the places I walk my dog is along the water and the shore is always littered with numerous items, from paint brushes, to shoes. I fill a grocery bag full of trash each time I walk there., and could fill many. It is very sad to see what we do to nature.

There are a few places like this in the world. I crewed on a sail boat in a race threw South East Asia it made me sick to see the amount of shit that's in the water there. I read somewhere that 500 square miles of the gulf coast water is dead, no fish no plant life not even bottom feeders because of the run off from the Mississippi. Im glad I wont be around to see what the world will be like in a hundred years

It'll be even better in 100 years. Technology is constantly improving so we'll have better recycling methods and production processes. There are already lots of new biodegradable plastics and other products out there and even better on the horizon. You can see improvement happening in some places. Look at Lake Erie.....it used to be a cesspool. Now the water is clearer and cleaner than it's been in a looooooooooong time. The little bit of crap we put out there is shrinking annually and I'm sure that in 100 years that nature will be healthier than it is now.

That may be happening in north America and other countries in Europe but places like China, Russia, India, and most of the so called 3rd world countries dont have those strick environmental laws, they are still producing an incredible amount of pollution and discarding it in the ocean or burning it I honestly dont see them changing any time soon. By the way one of the big reasons that lake Erie is getting so clear is because of Zebra Mussels.

Zebra mussels are filtering out alot of the pollution in the lakes.

Steve, relatively few people know this, but the Viet Nam War was an "Oil War".

Consider the geography, where oil is found today; the areas that were once shallow, subtropical and tropical seas, where layer after layer of dead vegetation, over millions of years, becomes oil.

The Yellow Sea off the coast of Viet Nam is one such area. Both the US and the Soviets were interested in either acquiring influence over this area, or preventing the other from doing so.

The oil is still there, Viet Nam is just not interested in developing it, at this time. That would disrupt the ecosystem, with fish and sea food a large part of the local diet and economy. In addition, at some future date, the oil reserves in other current supplier countries will be exhausted, and the market value of the Viet Namese oil will be that much higher, in an age to come when gasoline and oil are commodities only the 1% can afford, like in the Mad Max movies.
