Father of Orlando victim speaks up.
Detroit native Christopher Andrew Leinonen, 32, was among 49 people killed in Saturday night’s shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, according to the city of Orlando. His father, Mark Bando, responded to The Detroit News Monday with this letter.
“The website for the city of Orlando, FL has just added my son's name to the list of those killed at the Pulse nightclub shooting, so it has been confirmed.
His name was Christopher Andrew Leinonen, he went by the nickname of 'Drew' and he was gay, a fact I only learned about 5 years ago. While I was not thrilled to learn of his orientation, I accepted it as the way he was pre wired-when born. He was handsome, personable, brilliant and loved vintage movies. He grew-up, got a master's degree and became a practicing psychologist. He was born June 1, 1984.
Chris' mother Christine Leinonen was a MSP state trooper from 1981 to 1990. We were not married when he was conceived and born and he was raised by her as a single parent and he had her last name. After working a decade with MSP, Christine quit and moved down to FL, where she attended law school and became an attorney.
Before reaching high school age, Christopher lived in Macomb Co. and I had regular weekend visitation with him and paid child support for 18 years. His mother moved to FL and took him along, making regular in-person visiting very difficult, in the 1990s.
Chris graduated from Seminole FL High School and got his college degrees from UCF, which is when he began living in the Orlando area. In recent years, I only saw him in person about once per year, when I visited FL, or when he made one of his rare visits to Michigan.
Like his mother, Christopher was very idealistic about the human race, and he did not want to see the evil in the world or even to believe it existed. He used to laugh and joke and tell me I was paranoid, to carry a gun off duty, when I was a Detroit cop. He called me after September 11th, when his world view altered somewhat, after seeing planes fly into the World Trade Center.
So he made the giant leap to believing there are evil people in the world, but not far enough to acquaint himself with firearms, or to get a permit to carry. If we'd spent the last 2 decades living in close proximity to each other, I have little doubt I'd have trained him to use a gun. After seeing the Paris massacre last year, I thought, "If only one of the intended victims in that large crowd had been armed, many lives could have been saved."
I also thought, this couldn't happen in America, because surely, somebody in a large crowd like that would be armed, in the U.S. Wrong, history has repeated itself right here in the USA and my son and 51 others were slaughtered like helpless cattle, precisely because nobody in that club had a weapon to shoot back with.
Drew and his signifiant other Juan were both killed and I hope my son was taken quickly and without suffering. I hate to imagine some of the victims being terrorized for hours, because this armed killer was allowed to play God and exterminate them at will and in his own time schedule.
Drew phoned his mom Saturday evening before going to the club and the next morning, he was considered missing, because his mother heard about the massacre and was unable to contact him. We feared the worst and around mid day on Monday, it was confirmed that he had died at the scene.
The killer was armed and his helpless victims were not, yet the anti gun politicians still want to disarm the populace, enabling these scenarios. It is likely such attacks will continue, until the victims start shooting back. That's the lesson I take from this, for what it's worth. When the shooting started Saturday night, I'll bet there wasn't a person in the club who wouldn't have traded everything he owned in the world, for a loaded gun.

Because Muslims are no more responsible for terrorism than Catholics (IRA), Baptists (KKK), or Buddhist (Wirathu). Abortion is a decision a woman makes about her body, dependant on her particular circumstances, a fetus has no more conciousness than the cum-filled sock by your computer desk. Recreational drug use is another consensual thing you do to your own body, with the risks limited to only you. Shooting at people from a gun you can get with as much difficulty as a Viagra pill? A slightly different situation.
So how many times have you had to defend your home from an invading horde? Where's that tyranical government you Americans keep talking about? Won't that government be better armed anyway (just look at the ordinence in most of your police force)? A home invasion? A knife or tazer is much better suited to close quarters and has much better chances of succeeding.
I get it: You love your guns. That's ok. They make a person feel powerful, they're glorified in movies, ...
Not saying to ban all guns, just make it harder for people to get them, so that these weekly shootings are less likely to happen.

If everyone in North Korea has a personal firearm, how would Kim Jong-un enslave and murder citizens? Those who support a ban on guns must realize that government around the world regularly terrorize their own people because they (government) have the guns and the citizens don't.

Hopping over to another state in the US requires no border check, so bringing a gun into Illinois is a piece of cake. Canadian model of gun control is exactly one of the methods proposed, but even that is being shot down (Ha!) by Americans. The Swiss each have a gun, it's true, but it's locked away in the corner of their houses, as open carry and concealed carry is against the law. One of my martial arts teachers is Swiss, he lives there. Last time he was here, I pointedly asked him about that because (big surprise!) there was a mass shooting in the US at the time.
Abortion is a socio-economic issue, not a violence issue. It's a decision a woman or couple do about their own lives, not about the lives of others. If you're too stupid to understand that, I can't help you.
North Korea is a totalitarian government, the US is not. Also, we go back to the issue of training, where if you were to drop a gun in the hands of every Korean citizen, it wouldn't matter.

Statistically, abortions are performed mostly in the 1st trimester, with numbers dropping significantly in the 2nd, and to almost nil in the 3rd. Once the child is born, its parents need to raise it for 20 years. What if they can't? What do you do with such a child? There's a direct correlation between violent crime and being raised as a resented child (violent crime dropped significantly 20 years after Roe v Wade) so your argument not only doesn't help, it harms.

If you don't believe me then go on youtube and watch the many police/federal training videos that agree with me. Look at Filipino martial arts, which is one of the things I train and how they apply to meduim or close-quater situations.
Conflating prostitution with gun control is another falacy. There are already specific restrictions on sex work in places where it is decriminalised/legalised. Look at NZ and Australia. And again, I consent to see the sex worker, she constents to performing certain acts with me in exchange for an amount of money. In the case of the gun, you consent to buying the gun, I don't consent to being shot for no other reason than being in your general vicinity. Incidentally, look at how gun-related deaths have dropped in Australia since they actually DID take away their guns in 1996. That's per capita, so no talking about smaller populations. Also, even though violent crime exists in Oz, the death toll is still nothing compared to the US (again, per capita).
Despite your opposition to my arguments, your last 2 paragraphs mostly indicate you agree some change needs to be implemented. In that we agree. Your countrymen seem to disagree. Your overall stance is kinda muddy, which is why the NRA is better heard. Saying "I'm for gun control" is seen as a shameful statement because you immediately assume all guns will be taken away. That's not what most people are saying. It's an appeal to change SOMETHING, because what you're doing now is not working. Innocent people are dying, and your refusal for change makes you complicit in their deaths.

The photo, which was posted on the Camp MENdleton resale Facebook group—a closed group for male marines with an amassed 25,000 members—features an unnamed male corporal holding a military rifle with his finger poised on the trigger.
The caption accompanying the photo reads “Coming to a gay bar near you!”
Imagine getting on the resale page and seeing this garbage.
Another Facebook group set up to expose shared the deleted post. People are shredding the OP in the comments.
The post also promised that “Orlando was long overdue,” and that San Diego, the city near where the suspects were based, was “next,”
Shortly after the photo was uploaded, the marine who did so followed it up with “too soon?”
I MEF spokesperson Lt. Thomas Gray told the press that both the person featured in the photo and the person who posted the photo have since been identified.
“The Marine Corps does not tolerate discrimination based on sexual orientation, race, gender or religion,” read an official statement released by I MEF. “This type of behavior and mindset will not be allowed, and it is not consistent with the core values of honor, courage and commitment that are demonstrated by the vast majority of Marines on a daily basis.”
The founder of the Facebook group, Michael Moss, also publicly disparaged the photo.
“We do not tolerate hate speech,” Moss, who was also responsible for removing the post, told the press.
