So I am at a store this morning and after check out there is a woman who is blocking the way out of the store (She is obviously waiting on someone at another check out.) She is probably mid to late 50's in good shape as far as I can tell. I'm late 40's long hair and wear mutton chops (Think Wolverine).
So she turns and says "I'm sorry I am blocking your way."
I reply with "Don't worry ma'am, I'm in no rush."
She replies with "Ma'am? You just made me feel so old."

What other words would you use other than Ma'am? Sweetie? Snookums? Hotcheeks????

Miss always works. Even if she is married you will get a smile from her.

Ma'am is always what I always use. Ingrained from several years in the military. I can't retrain that response, it's automatic.

Situations like this is where I am good. I would have never let her get away with the comment. I would have come back with something like... well sorry but I was trying to be respectful. If you must know I was thinking that you look pretty good. You know milfy. hey, have a great one

She would have smiled all day.

Fuck the cunt for being so sensitive, there's nothing wrong with calling any woman "ma'am".
For some broads there's a problem with almost every word, you can't call them a gal, babe, dear, chick, honey, missy, sugar tits, dame, even lady gets their knickers in a knot.
:grrrrrr:

That would have worked :great:

fuck, for once I totally agree with auggie...damn!!!!

(and you forgot if you call em girls!!!)

But to answer the op: nope. Ma'am is prefectly fine.

In order of manners: she shouldn't have been blocking the door to begin with.....

You never know if you'll offend a trans-gendered person or a transvestite.
Best to go with something generic to all people, like "excuse me, snookums".

As stated, you could offend. If she's actually a young lady? She might take offence to that thinking she's much more mature than she actually is. If she's an older lady you might offend her by assuming she's young and inexperienced aka immature. The only time I've ever found that calling a woman a "girl" as in you "girls" is if they are really old, say in their 70's, then they don't mind. Everyone else is a crap shoot......

This is getting too complex.
I'm going to revert to my old standby: "YO! BITCH!"
