As soon as the kid is fat enough, the monkey is going to take him to meet the monkey's true master, Mr. Tiger.
 
What the monkey is doing is "grooming" which just about all primates do as a form of pair bonding or simply social grace.

As for the monkey "caring" for the baby, the only thing I saw it do was groom, not change the diaper, give it food or water or any of the other actions a mother does.

I bet if they could do a little research the monkey may have recently lost a baby of its own. I remember seeing a program on a group of chimps and if a new mother lost her baby, and there was another new born around, they'd let her take care of it also.
