Black bear shot dead in Newmarket backyard

A black bear was shot dead in Newmarket this morning after wandering into the backyard of a local home.

York Regional Police were called around 6 a.m. after the bear was spotted on London Rd., in the area of Yonge St. and Davis Dr.

They contained the bear to one backyard, where it climbed up a tree.


Officers from the Ministry of Natural Resources were called, but the bear started climbing down the tree before they arrived. At that point, police made the decision to shoot the bear out of concerns for public safety, York police tweeted.

They also said officers at the scene did not have tranquilizers.

Ministry of Natural Resources spokesman Todd Lane confirmed that the bear had been killed.

The incident marked the second time in two days that a black bear has been seen in the area.

The bear could have been tranquilized instead of killed but since he was killed I hope at least someone is sitting down to a good bear meat dinner.
