Police have targeted 17 people in raids in several European countries connected to a suspected "jihadist network".
Six suspects were detained in Italy, four in Britain, and three in Norway. Police believe some of the suspects may have travelled to Syria or Iraq.
Italy's Ansa news agency said the suspects were accused of international terrorism association.
The network was allegedly plotting to free its leader, Mullah Krekar, who is already in prison in Norway.
Krekar, born Najm Faraj Ahmad, and two others were arrested in Norway as part of the operation, on suspicion of plotting attacks in Norway and other European countries, according to Italian police.
They face extradition to Italy.
Krekar, the Iraqi Kurdish founder of the radical Islamic group, Ansar al-Islam, has served several jail sentences in recent years, including for praising the killing of staff at the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

ISIS Claims Responsibility For Beirut Bombings That Killed 40+


At least 37 people were killed and more than 181 wounded on Thursday in two suicide bomb blasts claimed by Islamic State in a crowded district in Beirut's southern suburbs, a stronghold of the Shi'ite Muslim group Hezbollah.

The explosions were the first attacks in more than a year to target a Hezbollah stronghold inside Lebanon, and came at time when the group is stepping up its involvement in the Syrian civil war -- a fight which has brought Sunni Islamist threats and invective against the Iran-backed Shi'ite group.

Hezbollah has sent many hundreds of fighters to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces in the four-year-old conflict over the border. Government forces backed by Hezbollah and Iranian troops have intensified their fight against mostly Sunni insurgents including Islamic State since Russia launched an air campaign in support of Assad on Sept. 30.

Syria's civil war is increasingly playing out as a proxy battle between regional rivals including Iran and Saudi Arabia, which supports the rebels. The two foes also back opposing political forces in Lebanon, which suffered its own civil war from 1975 to 1990, and where a political crisis has been brought about by factional and sectarian rivalries.

The blasts occurred almost simultaneously late on Thursday and struck a Shi'ite community center and a nearby bakery in the commercial and residential area of Borj al-Barajneh, security sources said. A closely guarded Hezbollah-run hospital is also nearby.

Islamic State said in a statement posted online by its supporters that its members blew up a bike loaded with explosives in Borj al-Barajneh and that when onlookers gathered, a suicide bomber blew himself up among them.

The group said the attacks killed 40 people.

Hezbollah vowed to continue its fight against "terrorists", warning of a "long war" against its enemies.

Mass grave of 'Yazidi women executed by ISIS' found in Iraq

IRBIL, Iraq: A mass grave believed to hold the bodies of dozens of women executed by ISIS was found Saturday in Iraq's Sinjar, where Kurdish forces are clearing bombs the extremists left.

Kurdish regional president Massud Barzani announced the "liberation of Sinjar" Friday, a day after the launch of a major ground operation to drive out ISIS that ended in not only a military victory for him, but a political one as well.

The bombs must be removed before the northern town's mainly Yazidi residents, from a minority group who were targeted in a brutal ISIS campaign of massacres, enslavement and rape, can return to begin rebuilding their lives.

And with the town retaken, new evidence of the extremists' horrific abuses against Yazidis is beginning to emerge.

Officials found the site of the mass grave based on information from young women enslaved by ISIS who claimed to have witnessed the execution of dozens of Yazidi women before later escaping.

Miyasir Hajji, a local council member, told AFP the grave on the edge of the town, which has not yet been excavated, is thought to contain the bodies of 78 women aged from 40 to around 80.

"It seems that the (ISIS) terrorist members only wanted young girls to enslave," Hajji said, referring to the extremists using women as sex slaves who can be bought and sold.

Mahma Khalil, the local official responsible for the Sinjar area, confirmed that the mass grave had been found, and estimated it held some 80 victims.
