Made with Love
i so hate my fucking laptop....fuuuuck i wrote a long post twice and hit the wrong button and lost it all....fuuuuckkkkkkkk

3000 will get you the engine.....2000 to put it in ......plus plus plus...this is why many people with older cars with engine troubles just scrap the car....

running your car for 5 minutes without oil means the engine revolved 15000 times....that causes major damage to all parts.....

sorry for the curtness, but i wrote two nice long posts explaining everything and lost it all fucking twice goddamn piece of shit fucking crap laptop......

Thanks tboy, that was an estimate but I love my car and I own it....

Sorry about your computer...I know the feeling....I want to throw this one
again the wall at times......

was that a written estimate by a qualified mechanic? if so, check to make sure the engine is a rebuild not just a used one.....you can get used engines from the wrecking yard for a lot less than a rebuild but the problem is, they've been sitting outside for how long? how many miles are on it? did the person who owned it before also forget to keep oil in it?

I did a kelly blue book quick look up (don't know the specifics of yours though) and the retail on the 1998 rav 4 is about $3900 so you'd be putting $3000 into a vehicle that's only worth about 900 more than that......

In the spirit of the thread....can anyone recommend an indy BMW mechanic in Toronto? I like RMP Motors but they're so out of the way.

if i remember the name i'll post it but i've heard for years that there is a guy on dupont just west of davenport who is a genius but doesn't charge you like he is......

just thinking out loud, i think he's located just east of the jag dealer that's down there....

Just remembered: there's also a guy on gerrard just west of carlaw, south side, i can't remember the name of the place, import auto service or something like that....he's the guy who didn't charge me tax on my starter replacement and i needed a complete brake job (front end) and he was only $100 more than a dealer i had the same work done and this dealer, my brother worked for and got me the job at cost.....

Ahhh, I think I know the first guy/garage you're thinking of. I've been down there a fair bit....bought a car with a lot of problems at that dealership! LOL.

Thanks. I'll check these places out. Not even sure I want to get the work done. I'm planning to trade in the car as I need a new ride. Any thoughts on fix and trade vs. just trade?

just trade it in....when i traded in my old pickup they gave me a price after the service guy drove it and checked it out....then halfway through the deal (they put it up on the lift after giving the price) they came back and said it had a main bearing seal leak....(means re and re the transmission) but they never budged on the price.....

if you trade it in to BMW they'll either put it in auction or fix all the little things wrong with it and sell it used....don't they have a bmw certified used cars program like honda|??

As for the dealer on dupont, i don't recall that he was a dealer....just a service centre specializing in bmw's.....the dealer is the jag next door or just down the road...it's been years since i was down that way......
