Totally agree. When I was a kid I went hunting with my father once. We shoot a bird and that was a very traumatizing experience for both of us. It was the first and last time we ever went hunting. Hunting animals if you are hungry is totally fine. Hunting for sports, find another hobby.

But how many realize that there are also hunts directed at controlling and culling animal populaces? With the encroachment of man into the wilderness, many animals are proving to be extremely adaptable, and thriving due to it. Many predators and scavengers are now finding easy access of food. Coyotes, wolves and bears are often nuances for farmers, as their animals are ready prey to them. The same applies to scavengers. Gone are the days where a lack of food source would control the populace. So in an effort to keep populaces down, the MNR issues licenses to to hunters to hunt and/or trap them.

Now certainly, my example above doesn't really compare to hunting an endangered species. My point was to illustrate is that there is still a time and place for hunting and trapping in the modern world, even though the need for the meat or fur does not exist.

Now, before you retort, answer me this.... You see a mouse, or mice, go scurrying across the floor in your residence. You going to put the traps or call an exterminator? Or do you leave them be?

I am with Maurice and oldguyzer, but lets hope that the public outcry will bring justice for Cecil.All these fuckwads are always smiling, this is what angers me the most. They've killed needlessly and smile!!!! Twitter is full of petitions and outrage, as I'm sure so are other social media outlets over this needless killing.
But the fact remains that "canned" hunting, so this "sport" is called, where the wealthy take their sorry asses to countries where wildlife can be hunted for no other reason than for a thrill. I find it funny and ironic how you comment to killing animals as being fine, simply because they "come into our space", yet you persecute those humans who want to punish another human because of their vile actions, wheres the sense! Perhaps instead of culling other species we should look to quell our own numbers, after all it is "we" that are destroying this planet, no other species can take that blame. However, I'm sure someone will come up with some explanation.
We'll only learn when we've finally depleted this planet of all it's natural resources and all other species, only then will we clue into our destructive and cruel ways and stupidity.

There's a huge difference between hunting a creature like a lion or elephant simply for trophy, and killing cockroaches in your kitchen, at least in my mind. Do I have qualms about killing the roach in my kitcken or mosquito sucking on my arm? Nope. But if I find a mouse in the house, I actually do trap it and let it go outside. I live in the country and have mice in the house quite often: they all get relocated outside without any injury at all (unless one of the dogs gets there first, which I try to avoid). Dividing line? Sentience, I suspect, although that's a grey zone. I don't kill spiders in my house, for example, because I appreciate that they kill flies and mosquitos! They too get relocated.

You fail to see the context of the question though.

I find it is not unusual for the urban crowd to get their knickers in a knot when they learn of hunting/trapping of foxes, coyotes, racoons, etc in rural areas. We hear the cries of "leave the poor animals be!" But do they ever consider the threat and harm these animals can do to those in rural areas, where they are often hunted. Coyotes can down a calf. Foxes can run rampant in chicken coupes. Racoons can soil and foul food stores, resulting in the livestock not touching it. And those are just some examples. These animals can pose a real threat to the lives and livelihood of those living in rural areas. As such they are treated as nuisances. My point being while many cry about the poor treatment of these animals, they wouldn't think twice about setting a mouse trap down if they found an invader.

Finally, you find it ironic I'm alright with animals being killed, yet chose to persecute those that wish to punish others. I wish to address this in two parts.

I grew up in a rural area. My father was a farmer by birth. He joined the MNR in parks and rec, and forestry. My uncle was also a farm boy, who joined the MNR in forest and timber. My brother-in-law was also a farm boy turn conversation officer. In other words I grew up in an area where the people differentiated between animals and pets. I grew up surrounded by those to whom hunting and fishing was acceptable practices. But also people who took conservation seriously. I don't mean signing petitions and writing letters. I mean in the field, monitoring those habitats, tracking animals, monitoring the health of the herds/packs/flocks. I got to see the hunters and fishers being the ones that find and report invasive species (read: non indigenous) . I got to see how the likes of foxes, racoons, coyotes, bears, wolves, etc could negatively effect the lives/livelihoods of those in my community. Do I like to see them killed? No. Do I understand that some people feel the need to do so? Yes. Do I accept it? See, because I understand why.

Why do I feel need to persecute those seeking to punish others? Because I believe in law and order. While our laws may not be perfect, they are there for a purpose. I do believe that laws should routinely be questioned, reviewed and updated to reflect the values of the society they represent. My issue lies in those that wish to take the law into their own hands. My issue lies in those that say "the laws are insufficient, I will then met out my justice as I see fit, and be damned the laws." What is this the wild west? "The neighbor's dog shit on mah lawn. I'm gonna torch his car, to learn him a lesson." These vigilantes that you applaud don't give a shit about justice. Hell, often they don't care about proof. Certainly forget about "innocent until proven guilty." They do not care who they drag into their shit storm until they get their 10lbs of flesh. They will attack anyone they feel it takes to make their target suffer. Spouses, siblings, parents, coworkers, neighbors, children. They are all far game.

Do I have a problem with a group hosting a "Wall of Shame"? Not at all, if anything they are providing a service. Plastering posters through out the neighborhood? Maybe. If the person represents a possible threat to the area, I can get behind that. Phoning the person at all hours of the day/night, spamming their email, harassing their spouse and children, following them about to "shame them", issuing threats, vandalizing property, I'm sorry you crossed the line and deserve a kick in the nuts.
