You never saw a horizontal plane, because there isn't one. Camera angle certainly can greater a greater sense of danger with this type of footage, but I don't believe there is any trickery here. Below that wooden walkway, there is nothing to stop you from a long ride down.

Having enough intelligence to use the safeties would help.
