A 10 year-old girl's death hours after a brawl with a classmate was ruled a homicide Monday by a California coroner.Long Beach fifth grader died of blunt force trauma, the Los Angeles County coroner's office ruled, according to The Associated Press.
Ramos had engaged in what police said with a fellow fifth grader in an alley next to their elementary school on Friday afternoon.Friends told reporters the conflict was over a boy."They were fighting just for a boy," Ramos' friend told KABC. "It's just stupid.
"Police said Saturday that Ramos had no visible signs of injury and they didn't believe either of the girls were knocked down during the fight, which lasted under a minute.But a friend's mother told the AP the fifth grader went back to her after-school program with blood on her hands from suffering a bloody nose.Ramos reportedly left the program early with relatives because she wasn't feeling well and had a headache.
She was brought to the hospital a few hours later, where she was rushed into surgery and placed in critical condition. Though she arrived at the hospital not breathing and in an unconscious state, her older sister told the AP that staffers were able to bring her back to consciousness before taking her into surgery.
"They did surgery on her brain because she had a blood clot, and after surgery the doctor said she was still alive, and then a few minutes later he comes back and tells us that her heart stopped and they couldn't bring her back," Urbina said.
Ramos died around 9 p.m. that night.Police have questioned the other student involved in the fight as well as the seven children who witnessed it. No arrests have been made.Ramos, whose birthday would have been March 12, was mourned Monday by tearful friends and family."She was so young for this to happen," Urbina said. "She was so happy and so many people loved her."
