A woman in Florida who was burned by a cup of Starbucks coffee was awarded more than $100,000 for her injuries on Thursday.

Joanne Mogavero won the suit in Duval County after a jury found the coffee chain negligent for the lid popping off their coffee cup and sending the scalding hot beverage into her lap, court records show.

The 43-year-old mom was at a Starbucks drive-thru in July 2014 when she ordered the Venti Pike’s Place coffee, her lawyer said.

While passing the coffee to the passenger’s seat the lid suddenly popped off and sent the 190-degree cup of Joe into her lap. She suffered permanent scarring.
The jury awarded Mogavero $15,492.14 for her medical bills and an additional $85,000 for her pain and suffering.

“My client didn’t want sympathy from the jury — she wanted justice — and the jury gave it to her with its verdict,” her lawyer, Steve Earle said.

If there was something deficient about the lid, or it was not put on the cup properly, then yes of course there is liability there. People roll their eyes, but if your kid's face got burned cause the top wasn't put on a coffee correctly, would you not expect the restaurant to take responsibility?

and 190 is pretty hot, most restaurant coffee is 180.

And that previous case from years ago? The facts of that case were grossly mis-reported in the press. If you read the actual case, the verdict made sense.

I need to start ordering more drive thru coffee.
