I was driving home from work and boom it begun. Took me 3 hours to get home.

At dusk, the biggest power failure in U.S. history occurs as all of New York state, portions of seven neighboring states, and parts of eastern Canada are plunged into darkness. The Great Northeast Blackout began at the height of rush hour, delaying millions of commuters, trapping 800,000 people in New York's subways, and stranding thousands more in office buildings, elevators, and trains.

Ten thousand National Guardsmen and 5,000 off-duty policemen were called into service to prevent looting.

The blackout was caused by the tripping of a 230-kilovolt transmission line near Ontario, Canada, at 5:16 p.m., which caused several other heavily loaded lines also to fail. This precipitated a surge of power that overwhelmed the transmission lines in western New York, causing a "cascading" tripping of additional lines, resulting in the eventual breakup of the entire Northeastern transmission network.

All together, 30 million people in eight U.S. states and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec were affected by the blackout. During the night, power was gradually restored to the blacked-out areas, and by morning power had been restored throughout the Northeast.

On August 14, 2003 another major blackout occurred which affected most of Eastern Canada as well as most of the Eastern .

It was a work day and getting ready to open. After a few hours we ended up playing poker under the candles. Lost $50.

I got a call that night from a co-worker and he asked me if I were at the power plant, today.

I cracked up because there is a big red button that says do not touch.

Oh boy, do I remember where I was! The power went off, the generator kicked in, summoned to full riot gear and the West Detention was put on lockdown! Had to work 72 hours straight with little sleep, nobody in, nobody out! Paycheque was great but it really sucked ass!

I was at my cottage about an hour north of Kingston.

Decided to try and make it back to the GTA where I was hoping there would be power.

Fortunately the block that I live on had power and all was well.

One block only of the whole area?.

I remember the day quite well.

I was living in a rural area of Markham and decided to go pick up Timmies to get out of the house and change the scenery. Hopped into my car and the radio was static, traffic lights were out at the first major intersection I hit and tried calling the house to no avail. It happened the second I left the house and on my way to my car. I had seriously thought it was some kind of terrorist attack or something with every type of communication being down.

I got my double double though :p As a precaution I grabbed 5 bags of ice and a case of water from the gas station.

Whole thing seemed like it came out of a movie. Having a wood stove was handy, although no power for the water pump meant having to fetch buckets of water to heat up on the stove to have a bath. Power was only out for 2 days max, but I remember it being much longer in other areas. I had a small gas powered generator, although I had no plans of using it while the major inconvenience was only lacking the indoor plumbing and the refrigerator being off.

I managed to fill gas in the car, get beer (yes the beer store was open at Markham and Eglington running on a generator), emptied the fridge and freezer into 2 coolers go pick up my hot GF at the time, load up the car with camping gear and headed north. Provincial parks were all closed for "safety reasons" so I paid a farmed to let me camp out in his back 40 ... Lots of sex , lots of bbq and doobies ...

I was in the middle of Lake Ontario sailing with a client. We were quite oblivious and having a blast ripping the waves. We heard about the power outage through the radio (marine channels). He brought is into the Toronto islands but it was chaos. By the time I made it back to the city and my car, it was close to dusk. I picked up my then girlfriend from her office and we cruised home in very light traffic. I remember being thrilled that we could use the 407 for free! LOL.

Yes. I was invited to swim at my friend's rental place. You could see the stars in Toronto as if I was up at someone's cottage. Suddenly she wanted to have sex with me which was awkward as we were only friends. Well, after my repeated NOs, I gave up and allowed myself to enjoy the moment. Then she gave me a new nickname......:)
