NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has tentatively decided to suspend Clippers owner Donald Sterling INDEFINITELY and impose a multi-million-dollar fine -- but Sterling will NOT be forced to sell the team -- sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ Sports.

We're told the suspension does NOT include members of Sterling's immediate family, but the NBA will have approval rights on who is running the team.

We're told Commissioner Adam Silver had a forensic expert review the recording and found no evidence it was altered and confirmed Sterling's voice.

And we're told ... an NBA investigator spoke with Sterling by phone after we posted the recording and the Clippers owner agreed to sit down for a follow-up interview but then changed his mind and backed out.

And we're told V. Stiviano told NBA reps the same thing we've reported ... that she had Sterling's consent before she recorded him.

One source tells us the fine has been tentatively set at $5 Mil.

I have to admit that as a younger man I had my racist moments.

I chalk it up to a lack of maturity on my part.

Sterling probably thought he was untouchable but his young tart sure put an end to that.

This is what I'm saying. Isn't having the BET (Black Entertainment Television) channel a bit racist? Isn't FUBU (For Us By Us) a bit racist? We wouldn't allow a white only sports league...why a black only sports league? Everyone discriminates and in this country has some right to their feelings though their actions are legally limited. You can say you don't like white people, black people, asians...etc, but you aren't allowed to "not hire, not serve, not do business with them" on that basis.

I get that there has been legalized racism in this country and that it was wrong and I'm glad most of it is stuck in the past. But to swing the needle the other way and try to make up for it by showing racism against caucasians is just as wrong.

Now, Sterling is a racist idiot who has said and done racist things in the past. He was also due to receive an award from the NAACP even after those other incidents of racism were known. You should be allowed to say racist things (freedom of speech) as long as you do not act on them to discriminate against anyone. Taking this guys team away from him would be wrong. People need to vote with their pocketbooks, don't buy tickets, don't buy jerseys, etc. Let the team go downhill until he HAS to sell the team or go bankrupt.

ESPN.com confirmed a report broken by the New York Post late Thursday night that the 80-year-old has had prostate cancer for some time.
The news comes just two days after Sterling was banned for life from the NBA and fined $2.5 million for racist comments he made in a taped conversation with his girlfriend.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is in the process of rallying the league's 29 other team owners to force a sale of the Clippers, the next step in removing Sterling entirely from the League.

"If that is true, my thoughts and prayers are with him," Clippers power forward told ESPN.com after the team's Game 6 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Thursday. "Nobody deserves to go through something like that."

Sterling: 'I wish I had just paid her off'

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling spoke out for the first time since he was suspended for life by the NBA this week for his racially charged comments on an audio recording.

In an interview with Los Angeles lifestyle magazine DuJour, Sterling mentioned his regret with his handling of V. Stiviano, the girlfriend with whom he was speaking when the recording that could end up costing him the team was made.

“I wish I had just paid her off,” Sterling told the magazine.
Stiviano also submitted to an interview, with Barbara Walters on ABC’s 20/20, and said Friday that she does not believe Sterling is a racist.

“I think Mr. Sterling is from a different generation than I am,” she said. “I think he was brought up to believe these things — segregation, whites and blacks. But through his actions he’s shown that he’s not a racist. He’s shown to be a very generous and kind man.”
Stiviano went on to say she thinks he should apologize for his remarks and that he feels abandoned, puzzled and alone by those close to him.

“I think he’s highly more traumatized and hurt by the things that he said himself,” she said. “I think he can’t even believe or understand sometimes the thing he says, and I think he’s hurt by it. He’s hurting right now.”
The remarks captured on the tape, in which Sterling encouraged Stiviano not to bring blacks to games and or to post pictures of herself online with black people, were not the first time he said such things, Stiviano told Walters.

“There’s been a number of occasions where Mr. Sterling and I had conversations just like this one,” Stiviano said. “This was one of very many.”
The magazine did not release any other comments from the billionaire businessman. DuJour reported that Sterling showed remorse while speaking with a reporter. He added that he would only do future interviews with the NBA or Walters, with whom he spoke Friday but would not consent to go on the air.

The NBA’s next move is to force Sterling to sell the team. Three-quarters of the team’s owners are required to gain approval to move forward. Sterling is expected to fight any attempts at a forced sale through litigation.

The New York Post also reported late Thursday night that the 80-year-old Sterling is battling prostate cancer.
