The moment long feared by conspiracy theorists is nearly upon us: The "doomsday comet" Elenin will make its closest approach to Earth Sunday (Oct. 16). Or what's left of it will, anyway.

One hit Russia in 1908. It never hit ground, or so said one group of researchers. They advanced the theory that it exploded mid air, about 20K feet. And there was one that exploded back in the late 70's over S Africa. That one did set off a number of theories that the Union of SA detonated an atomic weapon developed in a joint venture with the Israelis. It cuased quite a stir in the UN Security Council at the time.

After it "swings" by earth will it "swing" by mars for a couple of choclate bars?

Nice of it to swing by, just kind of glad it didn't have time to stop for a pint.......

I wish more people would heed this statement:

"Yeomans views the frenzy over Elenin as a product of the Internet age, which allows loud and often uninformed voices to drown out the rather more prosaic results"

Now there's a wall posting about a kid who stared at a BBQ too long and his contact lens' melted onto his eyes......I mean seriously, I wish people would do a little research before passing on nonsense.....

Each day, the earth collides with space debris (in the millions), and science can't track every piece.
Someday, it's going to happen -- today, tomorrow, next week, next year, 100 years, 1 million years, we're going to be hit hard.

And, unfortunately, we're still squabbling, getting into wars, etc. -- we should be finding a way to get off this earth!

why do you think they're hell bent on getting to mars?

I still say the eggheads know something and they ain't telling us. I mean, they know that on the way to mars they will be exposed to radiation and particles travelling at the speed of light that will damage their dna yet still are working their ass off to get there......

That's what the next moon visit will be about: working on obstacles that are to do with getting to Mars....

On Nova, they said that getting to Mars is like trying to thread a needle that is in NY all the way from LA.....it can be done, but damn it is difficult.

Just an example of how they can overcome obstacles:

When they were working on the first nuclear bomb. They found that one way to get the uranium to reach critical mass was to ram 2 pieces together. One theory was a "gun" that fired a small slug into a larger mass but that wasn't as efficient as a sphere collapsing onto a smaller sphere.

They set about testing to see if it could be done. It took them a LONG time to perfect it but they were able to compress a 5" diameter pipe to a consistant 1" diameter pipe using only perfectly timed precision explosions and shaped charges. The pipe was about 2 feet long and after thousands of bent and twisted pipes they did it: they made a pipe, perfectly straight and (I seem to recall) less than 1 mm out of alignment. Pretty fricken amazing feat of engineering....(that's how they made Fatman)

The Little Boy bomb was long thought to have been as you described it but it turns out that they fired the larger "casing" ONTO the slug. sort of like pushing a body onto a bullet and not the other way around. Fat man was compression of a sphere of plutonium and was the bomb exploded at the Trinity test.

I assume geting to Mars is a discovery mission to figure out why the planet died on the surface (below the surface is another story).
Latest discoveries is that outside our system are planets that could be comparable to earth.

I've read (according to scientist) that the USA government's (huge black op budget) makes 10 years of scientific advancement for every year (1yr = 10yrs), so I wouldn't be surprised if those flying UFOs are really US test crafts (eg. Stealth bomber was based on Nazi designs, etc and showed up in the 80s publically)
