SOUTHFIELD (WWJ/AP) - A local McDonald’s restaurant was forced to close after its employees walked out and hundreds gathered outside to protest for higher wages.
The restaurant on 8 Mile and Lahser roads along the Detroit/Southfield city line was just one location locally where fast food workers are participating in a nationwide “walkout for better wages.”
Over 200 protestors crowded the restaurant, carrying signs that read “We are worth more. Strike for 15,” as in $15 an hour.

I can see why people would want a living wage but the problem is it will raise prices right across the board. Companies like McDonalds, Tim Hortons might be able to survive with less profit but the mom and pop dives won't stand a chance.

first thing to do is close the dining rooms and go all drive thru

next cut the staff by 50%

Reduce portions by 25%

Raise prices by 12 to 15%

McDonald's is designed to bring in the families through the kids. This is why the extensive play lands and I can't speak for the US but you walk into most MD's in Toronto and the sitting areas are usually busy. The same with Tim Horton's. Ontario's minimum wage is if I'm not mistaken around $10.25, $7.40 is very low.

It is not free that is why there are student loans and 95 % with good marks get approved. Mind you it takes years to pay it off but well worth it.

Here is why you should make them happy because the next time you order a big mac with special sauce, it may very well be "Special" sauce.

Why would you say that. My parents, uncles and the other generations saved their pennies, bought homes and lived a decent life working for minimum wage. They sacrificed vacations, fancy clothes and many luxuries but they were happy.

These people want to be paid like skilled workers which they are not. Take part time courses, don'y buy fancy Iphones and sacrifice. Something they are not willing to do.

$7.40 an hour is a disgraceful wage. I would think somewhere between $7.40 and $15.00 is where minimum wage should be, like Guido mentioned in Ontario for adults it is $10.25\hr, students $9.60/hr and if I'm not mistaken servers are at $8.90 and hour. This is fair although that being said even at these wages a household cannot survive in Toronto but at the same time much higher and some businesses cannot survive. I'm not anti business I'm all about fairness.

McDonalds like the banks and oil companies are making huge profits and this is where the problem lies. Unions in such profitable companies should be brought in to level the playing field. It shouldn't be that a selected few line their pockets and enjoy the best life has to offer while the rank and file struggle to put food on their table. Prices are up, taxes are up, peoples wages are down except for a selected few (the 1%) and this is not fair and I'm not talking about the lazy bastard that is healthy and doesn't want to work so don't go there.

Manufacturing is leaving/gone, companies are off-shoring their customer service departments to India (sears is the latest) so maybe it's about time we start going after companies that cannot send the jobs away.

Rogers and Bell have teamed up to keep Verizon out of Canada. They have launched an impressive campaign attacking the government's unfair policy favoring the American communication giant. Well, workers working at McDonalds do not have the money to fight any other way and striking is their only option. This will happen more and more as companies try to lower the standard of living and ruin the American/Canadian dream. Just because a job is a stepping stone doesn't mean someone should be reduced to begging on the street to make more money.

Like most have said. You don't want to get paid minimum wage.

Go to school. Either study a trade like plummer, welder etc..

They are easy to get and always jobs available.

I can't see anyone but a student working for $7.25 an hour. I think all you do is push people onto welfare and onto the tax payer. That is less that $15000.00 a year.
