But tboy, many of us do things we enjoy even if the is only a small or no payout at all. I play guitar but will never make money from it. My GF collects spoons (which I'd get shot if I ever used). Its not all about the money, rather the enjoyment of doing it no matter how trivial or silly it seems to another person.

That may be true Playa but was he doing this as a hobby or to collect them for charity? I thought (or so it seemed from the story) that he was collecting them with the intention of donating them for charity......first thing that came to mind is the urban legend about some company paying 10 cents or something for pull tabs from soda cans....
