Yup ... one storm around supper time. Toronto got hammered by the rain clouds. London, Kitchener, Hamilton all got a little bit wet, but missed the major downpour.

A deluge of more than 100 mm of rain knocked out power and wreaked chaos on the evening commute Monday, forcing some motorists to abandon their cars as flooding washed out roads and suspended service on long stretches of subway and GO lines.

About 400,000 Toronto-area residents were without powerlate into the evening after black clouds plunged the city into darkness at the dinner hour.

Emergency services and utility companies were swamped with calls from residents trying to cope with backed up drains and overflowing rivers and streams.

The Toronto Police Marine Unit was pressed into service about 9 p.m. to rescue passengers stranded for hours on a 5:30 p.m. Richmond Hill-bound GO train that became stuck on the flooded tracks near the Don River.

Jonah Cait, 23, was among those who watched from inside the train as emergency workers plotted the rescue, even as water seeped into the coach.

“There’s a current; it’s not like you can just walk through it. Although, believe me, I’ve thought about it at this point,” he said about three hours into the ordeal.

Late Monday, TTC officials were still waiting to hear whether the power would be back on to restore service in time for the Tuesday morning commute.

Little India resident Kurt Krausewipz, said the “thick heavy sheets of rain,” reminded him of monsoon season in Southeast Asia.

He arrived home near Gerrard St. just before the skies opened but within an hour his basement was flooded and his roof was leaking — “Coming out of both ends, as they say,” he joked.

The heavy downpour in just a few hours was “one of the wettest moments in Toronto’s history,” said Environment Canada senior climatologist Dave Phillips.

Toronto’s wettest day — Oct. 18, 1954 — saw 121 mm of rain when Hurricane Hazel hit the city. But that was over the course of 24 hours.

Even before Monday’s downpour, the summer was off to a wet start. Since June 1, downtown has seen 165 mm of rain, about double the average of 87 mm.

“We’ve had a month worth of rain (on Monday),” Phillips said.

Bike of car? I made the mistake of being on the collectors going west heading towards the 427, it was a nightmare and I was surrounded by tractor trailers the entire time.

Over two hours from Dixie to Martin Grove. Car started overheating and sputtering, so I had to get off. No power and complete gridlock on Kipling and Eglinton, so finally found a side street and turned the car off. Would not restart. No buses, no subway, no go train. 4-5 hours for CAA. Over 2 hours to get in touch with a cab. $95 cab ride later and I'm home to a flooded basement.

Could have been worse. At least I was alone. If I was on the GO, someone probably would have been hurt.
