Love him or hate him, those assholes at the CBC need to smarten up. Ambush him at City Hall, at a public function etc.... fair enough. But to ambush him early in the morning in the driveway of his house is absolutely out of bounds. Particularly when he had his young daughter in tow, who by all accounts was upset and frightened by the commotion. He is a controversial Mayor with lots of people who wish him ill, some of them serious crackpots, and CBC thinks it is alright to put his house on TV??? If it had have been me I would have kicked Mary Walsh square in the balls.
Oh good God. First there's a big gulf between a 'comedy ambush' (generally good), and a 'journalist ambush' (generally not so good with some rare exceptions). Second, his version of events the first time didn't match the video. The sky was bright, the news van was in plain sight, his daughter must have been the invisible one (hard for a Ford), and he had a smirk on his face. It's also a bit of a stretch that he didn't know the CBC character, but hey, I don't know that. 911 appropriately categorized his call. His second version of events about the second 911 call only make matters worse. He has a knack for fulling things from his ass or just making them up to: a) get elected, b) tar an opponent, c) muddle through situations like this. Now, that audio from the second call is probably going to leak despite the police covering it up for him, and there should be little doubt that he was as vile, crass, and threatening as was reported.
The was a pure Rob Ford gong show fuck up from the start:
1) The whole situation could have been avoided / turned to his advantage if he oh say, invited the comedian into his van to look for gravy. It would have made lefties like me mad, been red meat to his base, and been a non-story.
2) When this broke, his version of events probably should have discernibly matched the video.
3) This should have been a 1 day story, if his version of events matched the video, he fessed up to both 911 calls, and mentioned he was 'a little upset' on the second call.
Any of the above would have made it to his advantage, or a one day story then dead. Heaping this on a CBC comedy program that's had the same highly recognizable schtick since the last Federal Liberal majority is just lame.
