It was a true Christmas miracle. A miracle that Rosie Sidhu and her sons couldn’t have anticipated.
The family was set to get through another Christmas without any presents. And then a phone call from the owner of Burlington’s J.P. Motors changed everything.
Rosie Sidhu knew she couldn’t afford Christmas gifts for her kids. But she was really worried about the next few months. Her car wasn’t going to pass inspection.
Then she got a call from Larry Pattinson, who owns one of the biggest used car dealerships in Ontario. She’d been chosen to receive his annual gift. This time, a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan.
Rosie Sidhu: “I even said in the phone, ‘is this a joke? This is a joke’. He said no.
Josh Sidhu: “Without this car, there won’t be a Christmas. It’s the best present ever.”
He’s not exaggerating. The family was just given their first Christmas tree. Rosie was just given a bed, so she won’t have to sleep on the floor of their subsidized apartment. Before, they lived in shelters.
Rosie: “I didn’t have nothing. I used to go with my kids through the garbage and second hand stores.”
(You had to dilute the milk?) “Yes. It was the worst, I didn’t like that because I used to cheat on them, put water in the milk so it would last longer, so they could have it with cereals. But they noticed, I got caught.”
Kathy DeSantis: “She has her little boy Joshua who was diagnosed with leukemia before he turned six. And he’s still not well.”
Kathy DeSantis met the family through a meal program she runs: “She said, she said to her kids, there will be no Christmas. We have no gifts. I mean, sometimes she has no food. And she doesn’t ask. She spent the whole summer without a washing machine, didn’t tell me. Did all the washing by hand. I mean all the washing. In the bathtub.”
But Rosie did tell Kathy she was worried about the car: “She still has to bring Joshua a lot to the doctors a lot and her car is falling apart. It’s being held together with band aids practically.”
Kathy didn’t know what to do, until she saw the J.P. Motors ad, calling for submissions. Her letter broke the car family’s heart. and now the Sidhu’s have luxuries, like heat.
Rosie: “Finally my kids say, we’ve got heat in the car.”
And it’s not just the van. J.P. Motors had a Christmas party and collected so many gift cards, food and presents. There might not be enough room for the family in this van.
Rosie: “This is a big changing for us. It’s nice. I’m so excited, you can tell.”

That's the holiday spirit.

Rosie: “Finally my kids say, we’ve got heat in the car.”

WOW !!!

Maurice Boscorelli, I'm a bit behind, I just got up on Sunday morning.

If the recipient was chosen randomly to receive the car, this is an excellent fluff piece, to pad a slow news day at CHCH.

If the car dealer had prior knowledge that Rosie Sidhu could not afford Christmas presents for her children, then I am unmoved. That would suggest that, when one is in need, one should draw attention to oneself, in an effort to benefit from guilt felt by those who have more than they need. I also don't see how a car received by Ms Sidhu constitutes a gift for her children. If she sold the new car just given to her, she could afford to buy them gifts for the next several years, and some for other people, too.

Christmas isn't about receiving gifts, it's about giving them to other people. Somewhere along the line, almost everybody forgot that.

The car dealer approximately broke even, when you factor in the tax savings from the giveaway, and the financial benefits towards future sales, that promotions of this type generate. Ms Sidhu may have gained a new vehicle and fleeting local fame, effectively for not having the means to give material possessions to her children, in excess of food, clothing, and essentials.

You know who else can't afford to buy Christmas gifts for their children? Greece and Bangladesh, to name two examples.

Honest Ed used to give away free frozen turkeys to shoppers at Christmas. I don't know if he also gave free cooked turkeys, to people who don't own ovens.

To me, any charitable act that involves tax savings and self promotion to the giver is tainted, to an extent, and really no different that the Papal Indulgences once given by the Catholic Church, to rich benefactors, in exchange for forgiveness from remorse for the sins of vice.

True charity should not also entail some personal material gain for the giver, other than the act itself.

If you have a moment sometime, check the Wikipedia page for Taylor Swift, and read only the Philanthropy section. I don't recall her ever having a televised press conference to promote her generosity. I don't appreciate Ms Swift's music, but I'm not her target audience. As a person, she's the greatest role model of her generation, and is hated by many, for that very reason, as well as for her dancing at awards shows. The best laugh I had in 2014, other than something I thought of myself, was when I saw the Yahoo! News photo of her, taken by paparazzi, in New York City, wearing a T-shirt with the slogan:

no its becky

That's based on a famous social media post:

Full size:

I cropped a 125 x 125 pixel portion of the image, and sent it to Art Mann, as an avatar suggestion, in case Hiding comes out of retirement again. He pointed out that I had flipped the image horizontally, while cropping, but it was a good choice. That's the last PM I sent to him that he answered. I am confident in our mods, that I will not be reprimanded for disclosing private message correspondence in open forums, for this particular piece of information.

Compare that to the same section on the bio page for Justin Bieber, who can't afford to be charitable at the moment, because he just spent $60 Million Dollars buying himself a private golden calf with wings.

The Shriner's give lots of money to lots of charities, with the best of intentions, but they also get to drive around city streets in those little cars like the one Tom Hagen bought for Anthony for Christmas, on Michael's behalf, while Michael was busy in Cuba trying to have Roth whacked, in II.

Beginning to like your style but you are guilty of your own words.

Do not hijack threads.

Good one Bosco.
