I think having limited sick days (full pay) tends to keep employees honest. In the sense that many see sick days as additional vacation days. I knew many employees who were sick almost once a week, 3 times a month. It was fricken ridiculous actually. (and the worst part is, they'd come in the next day all chipper and healthy without any sign of any type of illness).
One of the things I learned over the years is, if you're sick? Stay the fuck home. I read a report that one sick person coming into work ends up costing the company weeks of man hours due to others they infect and lost production.
The thing that gets me is the EI. I have paid into that for...oh....30 yrs? (except for the last 8 or so when I was self employed) and I have yet to be able to make any sort of claim against it. Then I hear about "seasonal" workers who work through the summer then go on pogie throughout the winter even though there are jobs available. Same as snow plow operators who take every summer off......it burns my ass because here's a time when I could really use it, I mean, I am certainly not FAKING it yet can't get any.....
