One dad’s outrageous outburst during a youth hockey game in Winnipeg, Canada has turned him into a lightning rod for condemnation. Making his behavior even more despicable, the man was actually holding an infant in his arms during the incident.
The man, identified as Jason Boyd by CBC News, was caught on video heckling a short child, calling him a “midget,” and then threatening to assault the boy’s father. The players were reportedly 15-years-old.
“Just ’cause he’s a midget!” Boyd yells out during the hockey game.
The boy’s father stood up for his son and sarcastically “thanked” the boisterous man for calling his son a midget. And that’s when he snapped.
“Don’t touch me or I’m gonna cave your f**king glasses in, you got that?” Boyd told the father aggressively.

Across Canada, in rinks, recreation centres, school gyms, on public playing fields are signs about fair play and no disrespect is tolerated. Every Federal and Provincial sports governing body has policies which are enforced by all leagues and clubs.

Currently I sit on a Federal and a Provincial disciplinary boards for basketball, not only would the parent be removed permanently but the child would be banned because of the parent(s) actions. Police would be called because of the threat and banishment from facilities would also take place.

That man embarrassed himself, his family (it appears to me that the blonde is probably his wife) and there's no place for this crap in minor club or recreational sports. The only way to combat the issue is banishment, ban the player for a season and the parent will learn to keep his/her mouth shut!

As an administrator, coach and board member, I have never tolerated anyone doing this. In fact, I've cut players mid season because of their parent(s) attitudes, I've disqualified teams for tournaments and Provincial tournaments because of bad team or fan behaviour and I have not and will not ever think twice about doing so.

Thankfully, it was taped and played on CBC and I hope Don Cherry gets ahold of this and tears the creep a new one on Coach's Corner!

Same happens at soccer. I was head referee for several international youth tournaments, albeit quite a few years ago, and the kids would get so frustrated at their parents obnoxious attitudes and behaviors. I actually had to call one game as a forfeit because parents on one side were tripping the other side players, and I saw one parent throw sand in an opponents eyes as they ran by. Pathetic.

this is the reason I stopped hosting incalls on weekends. In the winter every damn hotel is full of boisterous hockey parents and their offspring. I had a bunch of pre-teen boys playing "ding-dong-dash" on my hotel room door one day ... most of the time the pool is full of badly behaved unsupervised rugrats, the hallways and elevators and overrun... enough to drive a lady nuts.

Don't get me wrong ... I love children. Just not other people's. :biggrin2:

Hockey father suspended for antics caught on video

Jason Boyd was caught on video Monday night at Southdale Arena getting into a verbal altercation with an opposing team’s parent and calling the opposing team’s player names.

On Thursday night, the Lord Selkirk Minor Hockey Association held a 90-minute long meeting at St. Andrews Community Centre to decide Boyd’s fate. The Association’s President tells Global News that Boyd has been suspended for all upcoming Lord Selkirk playoff games, including his son’s games, and he must also make a verbal apology to the St. Boniface-area team involved. The decision is pending approval from the Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association, a decision expected Friday. It needs approval from WMHA because the playoff games are outside of the LSMHA jurisdiction of St Andrews, Selkirk, and East Selkirk.

The LSMHA says suspending Boyd is not about one man and whether or not he gets to see his son's hockey games - but a bigger issue of parent behavior and aggression that’s been happening in Manitoba rinks for years.

"I believe you could see this same video that you saw on TV and on YouTube, you could see in a hockey rink almost every night." Said Todd Cook, President of the Lord Selkirk Minor Hockey Association.

"We can't go on in hockey with the way it is right now with the fans and everything else. We have to put a stop to this somewhere."

Global News could not directly reach Boyd, who is currently in the United States, for comment. Cook tells Global News that Boyd was delivered the news via conference call at the end of Thursday night’s meeting. Cook says Boyd was “not happy” about the decision but that he was satisfied by it.

The LSMHA says there is no official guideline or rule book on how to handle these types of situations. It hopes by making an example of Boyd that other parents think twice about what they say to coaches, referees, and fellow parents as well as how they behave at the rink.

The Ontario Soccer Association has soccer court for coaches, players and parents, they can face fines, suspensions and expulsions and I think that it's a great way to deal with problem behaviour.
