This will probably sound pathetic to those who haven't lived long enough, but today I threw out a blanket I've used for 40 years.
The "blankie" was one of those light thermal blankets that are so common. It was in tatters and needed to go. But it had always done the job. It was one of those "just right" things that did its job for 40 years.
The turning point came when I coughed up a 'fur ball." I'm not making this up. A tiny bit of the red and yellow blanket had come detached and ended up in my throat for several days.
I didn't know it at the time until I coughed it up. There is was a spongy bright red and yellow piece of material.
Then over the last several days, I noticed additional tiny tufts of red and yellow material on the bed that had become detached.
Well, nearly swallowing one piece of the blanket was enough. It was time to send the one who had served me so long and so well to blanket heaven, ie, the dump.
It's not there yet. right now is is resting peacefully in the tall plastic kitchen trash container waiting for it's next move (to the Gulag outside the kitchen door) before it reaches its final resting place.
It's different to have a routine for 40 years and then change suddenly it.
So lets have a moment of silence for the poor thing.
