Robertson, I know a few good teachers out there. They care about their students. They work incredibly long hours outside of 6 hours. They have no choice because they need to plan and assess their students. It is impossible to show up in a classroom ill prepared and have students engaged all day.
Like any professions, there are a few bad apples out there. They also got degrees from university just like other professionals. CPA, doctors, engineers and they all get paid well. The teachers get paid accordingly like others and believe it or not, teachers are grateful of their pension plans. They chose this profession knowing full well how they much they would earn just like doctors, accountants, nurses and speech pathologists. ......and yes those teachers knew they would get 2 month summer off and 2 week winter break. So for those who want those perks, become a teacher. Thats not news.
Get this.....the teachers' biggest concerns (those who have worked more than 10 years): the school board or the system give the kids way too much power and fail to set up them up to succeed in the real world.
The teachers understand the need for students' safety but lately, the way they think or being coddled by the parents to death, many teachers are left feeling vulnerable. If a student lie, a teacher's reputation gets tarnished. If caught lying, forgive the student but teacher's reputation remains tarnished. Yet students are taught they are forgiven without dealing with the consequences. This is so counterproductive.
Students receive homework, some parents complain it is too much. Yet when report cards show students are falling behind, parents are quick to blame the teachers. Students are not allowed to fail. SO they know they will pass every year and figure out they dont need to worry about passing the grade. No sense of responsibility and when they reach at the age of 18, the schools closed their doors on them. Then they complained no-one has trained them properly for the real world.
Regarding the 30 years old man, I don't know why someone is assuming he may have a disability or not. He is 30 years old!!! Disrespecting his parents and taking them to court is ridiculous. Is he going to live in a ditch? Why not? He will learn to survive. He will learn to make better choices. He will learn to be self reliant. Stop blaming the schools or parents for not preparing them for the real world. I didnt see anywhere in that article where he blames himself for anything.
If he has to work at a low paying job, it is a start.
For those who have a disability, I can only imagine there are many barriers out there for them. Some of my friends are blind, Deaf or use a wheelchair and many of them have a job. I mentioned this article to one of them and his first reaction: "For F%&^%&%ing sake, get a job!" Enough said.

Semi retired, take on projects that suit my schedule now.
Ran design departments, designed and programmed industrial control systems for automation/material handling and assembly, automated welding systems, sewage treatment plants, etc, and also designed industrial hydraulic systems.
Commissioned systems as far away as Kamensk-Uralsky Russia.
Put up with more shit than any civil servant would ever have to put up with, including putting up with the ass hats in the CAW and UAW.
Self taught, except for night school in fluid power, (hydraulics).

Calling it a form of slavery is offensive to those who have been through slavery in the past. Slaves get NO freedom who have to endure through countless abuse. CEO's like the Koch brothers sit around in their asses all day pouring money out of their orifice and I'm fine with taxing 90% of their money so they would go towards people who are in need.

- Prep time is bull shit, unless 1 and 1 doesn't equal 2 anymore, its the same thing class after class.
- Teachers are behind the not grading students, as doing so would also grade teachers, and that is just not allowed, how dare you even mention that.
They fought tooth and nail against their employer directing them as to how they utilise "prep time".
And there lies the problem, they don't seem to realise they actually have an employer.

- Established teachers pay is equivalent to $120,000 per year, for teaching grade 4 math, give me a break.
- Nobody is stating that teachers didn't know they would be paid $90,000 per year, for 9 months of 6 hour days, the longer they are a teacher, the more money they make, why, not because of performance, simply because its in the all important union contract.
So you understand, we have teacher friends, and when we changed cities, come up to visit us for a week ends, and we did likewise.
Teachers as individuals, are responsible adults, but get them as a group in a civil servant union, they become greedy and arrogant.

Last time i checked, those teachers have Science, Accounting, Math degrees. Meanwhile my friend has a Geography BA degree and she is currently the top manager of an IT department at some bank earning 250, 000 a year. Go figure.
Regarding union, that is another topic. There are many arguments for and against unions. Just be careful with Madman who is Pro union.
He insists on receiving free rent and coffee as part of the collective agreement. We have many greedy and arrogant people everywhere, including all professions.

This is true as it is part of the collective agreement. However, do you honestly think many teachers only work 6 hours a day? Where do they find the time to assess students? gather the required materials to teach their students? Many books are not available to students and these teachers have to come up with their own materials. I am just scratching the surface here as the list goes on and on.
A grade 4 math teacher earning 120, 000. I dont think so. Checking online here, according to TDSB's payroll chart, over 10 years, a teacher would make up to 96,000 under level 4. If level 3, you would earn less and so on.
Meanwhile who are you voting for regarding this year's provincial election?:biggrin2:
