First the family knew the lady was gravely ill and failing fast. So the possibility of not being able to make the flight even if she was alive was very possible. They should have booked a ticket that could have been redeemed or transferred to another person at a later date.
Now for the Airline - They knew that they were going to get flack over this so why did they not make some kind of gesture to make the problem go away and not become a political football.Hmmmmmm
