Goats aren't pets/ animal companions, unless you're Katniss Everdeen's little sister. People breed them because they provide milk to drink, or for cheese, and because they taste good. They also provide wool, leather, etc. You can even make soup from their head; there's a Rolling Stones album about that, it's called "Goat's Head Soup":

The advantage of goats is that they''ll eat things that people won't, and they 'earn'. They'll eat anything, anytime, just like a teenage boy, going through a growth spurt. Cows need to eat tons of grass and grain.

Goats will eat weeds, scrub brush, even tin cans, in old cartoons. This one wasn't eaten because people in India would think it has religious significance, instead of being an un-beneficial spontaneous mutation, perhaps caused by toxic chemicals released by a company that couldn't get away with that in an Industrialized country, with more strict pollution control laws.

Kill the goat because it is different or deformed? Yet when a person is born disfigured we do what we can to "right" them....... anything can be made to taste good, even human flesh, it was eaten by certain tribes, and maybe still is, that doesn't mean it should be..... and any being can be made a into pet, since a pet is something a person loves and cares for. If someone wants a pet goat, so be it, and I see nothing wrong with it. As a matter of fact I know of many animal sanctuary's where there are many pet goats, cows, pigs, horses, cats, dogs, sheep, chickens, etc, etc. Why criticize kindness or what another finds comforting.

Cristy, I didn't say the one-eyed goat should be killed and eaten. I said the one-eyed goat would have been eaten by now, if he had been born with two eyes.

In India, the cyclops goat would be seen as a manifestation of one of the Hindu Gods. In ancient Israel, the same goat would have been considered unworthy of being a Divine sacrifice, because he is not 'unblemished. In nineteenth century America, he would have been exhibited as a tourist attraction in a traveling carnival. In seventeenth century America, he would have been seen as evidence that his owner was a witch.

People often do this for themselves, for their offspring, or for an employee; things like nose jobs, orthodontics, or breast enhancement surgery. 'We' don't necessarily do that for everyone in India, nor do the affluent of that country. That would only be done there, if it was paid for by voluntary, anonymous charity, or the proceeds of a class action lawsuit.

I was going to say 'men are not goats', but that is debatable. Anything that does not taste good, but has nutritious value, can be eaten. Food does not need to taste good, to be consumed as caloric fuel.

There are some things that cannot be made to taste good, like stink beetles, dog excrement, sulphur, turnip, etc. Unpalatable food can still be eaten, if one holds their nose, is competing in a contest, trying to enter a college fraternity, or accepting a dare. I am no longer allowed to comment about certain tribes today who taste human flesh, (by mod decree).

Spoken like a true Feminist. This statement is false. Do you know anyone who has a pet salt water crocodile, praying mantis, or Chuck Norris? Being a pet requires voluntary submission to the caregiver's conditions. Pet status for a human is also known as bondage, slavery, or marriage. The feral cats that I feed in an alleyway would rather die than be a pet, as did Spartacus, Captain Kirk in the Star Trek - TOS episode "The Gamesters of Triskelion", or Caesar, in the Sacred Scrolls from the movie franchise "Planet of the Apes", among others.

If someone wants a pet goat, so be it, and I see nothing wrong with it. As a matter of fact I know of many animal sanctuary's where there are many pet goats, cows, pigs, horses, cats, dogs, sheep, chickens, etc, etc. Why criticize kindness or what another finds comforting.

People do not keep pet goats in India. They are not 'sacred cows'. A goat with one eye might not be eaten, only because there would be some doubt among many that his flesh would be tainted in some way. Sympathy for those individuals born inferior is not universal. Since having only one eye is not a beneficial condition, he would not be breeding stock.

I am so going to have to prove that I'm not a robot, for this post.
