10-year high of flu cases in Toronto

TORONTO - Toronto is experiencing a 10-year high in flu cases because the season is off to an early start, Toronto Public Health says.
As of last Saturday, there were 304 reported flu cases in the city compared to the normal 10-year average of 86.

“The curve normally goes up later,” said Dr. Irene Armstrong, Toronto’s associate medical officer of health.
“We are seeing higher numbers earlier right now, but we are definitely in a wave. It’s difficult to predict what the strain will be and when things will peak,” she said.

Although this year’s flu shot is not a perfect match for the season’s strains, Armstrong recommends people get immunized this week.
“There is a wave of activity and it will increase over the next few weeks, so it is important to get the shot now,” she said.
Armstrong says a reason flu numbers may be increasing is that more people are being tested than in past years and the tests for flu are more accurate now.

Toronto Public Health says a flu shot is 60% effective in preventing influenza.
It’s recommended everyone over six months of age get the shot, although it can be less effective for seniors.

To avoid the flu, people are advised to wash their hands frequently, use alcohol-base hand sanitizers and avoid touching your face.
