Google 'reveals user' over Gmail child abuse images

Google 'reveals user' over Gmail child abuse images

I have mixed feelings about this one. I am glad they caught the pedo but how much more information can they gather from me?.

Google has revealed the identity of a user after discovering child abuse imagery in the man's Gmail account in Houston, Texas, according to a .

It alerted a child protection agency, which notified the police and the man was arrested, KHOU 11 News reported.
Google told the BBC it would not comment on individual accounts.
The arrest raises questions over the privacy of personal email and Google's role in policing the web.

Police in Houston told the local news station that Google detected explicit images of a young girl in an email being sent by John Henry Skillern. After the existence of the email was referred to them by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the police obtained a search warrant and arrested the man.

The 41-year-old is a convicted sex offender. He has been charged with possessing child pornography, it was reported.
"I can't see that information, I can't see that photo, but Google can," Detective David Nettles said.

Google has said it searches Gmail to prevent the spread of child abuse imagery

Seems like every day, the privacy of innocent people is being compromised in some new way due to the activity of criminals.

I read an article somewhere recently that talked about how the right to privacy is a fairly new issue in our society. I don't think we have a constitutional right to privacy, do we?

Always read the fine print or suck it in.

In April, Google updated its terms and conditions to say: "Our automated systems analyse your content (including emails) to provide you personally relevant product features, such as customised search results, tailored advertising, and spam and malware detection. This analysis occurs as the content is sent, received, and when it is stored."

I would sacrifice my personal information to Google as long as pedophiles are caught.

Why the mixed feelings?.

They stopped one criminal from abusing more children. Good in my books.

Suppose they started to give out information on....let say....just out of the blue....guys who hire (or communicate to hire) ladies for prostitutional purposes? It's illegal and some people would see it just as justified as turning in a pedo.

You sure it's still worth it?

Say that again?.

Montreal woman wins cash from Google for Street View cleavage

Montreal woman wins cash from Google for Street View cleavage

Google has been ordered to pay $2,250 to a city woman after an image of her cleavage showed up on Google Street View five years ago.
The unnamed woman was photographed sitting on the front steps of a Montreal home wearing a low-cut top and checking her phone on May 8, 2009. Five months later, when the images were uploaded to Google's Street View maps, the woman was horrified to discover her picture on it.

In the photo, her face was blurred out, but she argued in court she was easily recognizable and the photo was embarrassing because her tank top had slipped down to reveal more of her right breast than she had intended.

After the image hit Street View, the woman said some of her colleagues commented on the photo and teased her.

She contacted Google to have the image removed, but it took until 2011 for Google to completely blur out her home.
The woman sued Google seeking $7,000 in damages.

Google claimed the woman waived her right to privacy by sitting in her front yard where she was easily visible, but a Quebec judge disagreed.

In his Oct. 4 ruling, Judge Alain Breault said the woman "experienced a significant loss of personal modesty and dignity," and had to ensure "malicious comments and humiliation" at work. He ordered the company to pay her $2,250.

On its website, Google says it takes a number of steps to "help protect the privacy and anonymity of individuals" including blurring faces and licence plates.

I was shot standing nude by my front window, can I sue too?

No! HOOKED says it's in your contract that Google Street View may use you as clickbait to increase their traffic.

Do D cups get paid more than A cups in this cleavage case? Is that not discrimination?

Um....if she was willing to sit out on her steps with that outfit revealing what it did.....why does she get a pay day for the google image. I'd understand if she'd been inside the home....but I don't think privacy extends to being outside on your front steps.

Got the feeling this isn't the full story...sitting outside means public exposure, and there's no laws against taking photos on public streets.
